Trump still leads Iowa; Clinton in good shape
PPP's new Iowa poll finds Donald Trump continuing to lead in the state with 24% to 17% for Ben Carson, and 13% for Carly Fiorina. In single digits but getting decent levels of support are Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio at 8%, Jeb Bush and Mike Huckabee at 6%, the now departed Scott Walker at 5%, and Bobby Jindal and Rand Paul at 4%. Rounding out the field are John Kasich at 2%, Chris Christie and Rick Santorum at 1%, and Lindsey Graham, Jim Gilmore, and George Pataki all at less than 1%.
Trump's recent comments about President Obama waging a war on Christianity don't hurt him much with the GOP base. 69% agree with the sentiment that the President has waged a war on Christianity, with only 17% disagreeing. Trump's probably not hurting himself too much with his negativity toward Muslims either- only 49% of Republicans think the religion of Islam should even be legal in the United States with 30% saying it shouldn't be and 21% not sure. Among Trump voters there is almost even division with 38% thinking Islam should be allowed and 36% that it should not..............
............On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton is in pretty good shape. She leads with 43% to 22% for Bernie Sanders, 17% for Joe Biden, 3% for Martin O'Malley and Jim Webb, and 2% for Lincoln Chafee. Among Biden's voters 43% say Clinton would be their second choice to only 15% for Sanders. Reallocate them to their second choice and Clinton would lead Sanders 50/25, almost identical to the 52/25 lead we found for her last month when we didn't include Biden........

(3,649 posts)I understand that polls are subject to variation, but we've seen Bernie's support fluctuate 10-20% in Iowa and New Hampshire polls within the last couple of weeks. That seems a little much when Clinton's and Biden's support has been relatively steady in those same polls.
George II
(67,782 posts).....the last PPP poll was Clinton 52, Sanders 25, Biden 0 (Clinton +27)
Now it's Clinton 43, Sanders 22, Biden 17. (Clinton +21)
Now, and with Biden being considered, Clinton dropped 9, Sanders dropped 3.
Obviously most of her "loss" is to Biden, so when he decides to not run she'll be back up.
HerbChestnut
(3,649 posts)Had Sanders leading in Iowa, both of which had him over 40% with Biden included. Even a week before those there were polls showing Sanders approaching or surpassing 30%. 22% seems low, and I've noticed that PPP's polling tends to do that. Now I'm not one of the conspiracy theorists, but it's possible that PPP's methods for whatever reason result in Bernie registering lower than what he actually has. Guess we'll have to wait for other polls to come out in the near future.
George II
(67,782 posts)...there have been 10 polls released for the Iowa Caucus.
Seven consistently showed Clinton in the mid-40s up to the 50s, with Sanders pretty much in the high 20s (a couple had him at 30 or a few points higher)
Then those two that showed Sanders ahead by 1 point and 10 points.
Now we're back to the same result that we've had for the last several months - Clinton ahead by 20+ points.
HerbChestnut
(3,649 posts)The polls are all over the place. Bernie's been on a steady rise in Iowa so when those two 40% polls came out I wasn't surprised even though they seemed a little high. If this latest poll had him at 30% or thereabouts it would have been understandable, but 22% goes against the trend when nothing significant has happened to him politically that might have spurred something like a 20 point drop. I guess the lesson is that you can't judge a single poll unless it's put into context with others around it both in the past and in the future.
For those requesting a link to the polls I mentioned earlier: [link:http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2016/president/ia/iowa_democratic_presidential_caucus-3195.html|

(458 posts)... we're looking at the trends. And that national poll that didn't include anyone under 50??? Apart from scratching my head over why ANY progressive or liberal would give HRC the time of day, the Bernie Sanders campaign is more than just a candidate.. its a movement away from the billionaire money that has completely corrupted our democracy.
I noticed that none of the HRC backers can defend her catastrophically bad choices. Makes me wonder if this isn't a whole tribe of trolls on the site..

(57,936 posts)Hillary"s votes and stances on those issues tell us who she really is: a conservative and a sell-out to the corporations.
Iowa farmers favor GMOs. They raise their per acre corn yields. Just ask an Iowa farmer about that.
Iowa farmers like trade agreements. Those agreements help them sell more corn. What do they care whether Americans in urban areas are homeless or working for subsistence pay?
From Iowa, you are see very little other than green fields, lots of water and in the winter, snow.
Iowa is not typical of America. I know it is well, and I love it, but it is what much of America used to be, not what we are today.
Iowa should not be an early primary state. A large, urban state should be in the mix of early primary states, and one state on the West coast should be among the early states.
The system is so very rigged toward predictably conservative results.
No wonder so few Americans vote. By the time it is their turn at the polls, the decision has been made.
I"m in California, and I object to this rigged system in which my vote counts for far less than those of people in smaller states like Iowa.

(17,663 posts)Let's see what Biden says about it...he's still in the Admin.
She was waiting to see a decision from the WH, which is dragging its heels. This whole thing was involved with the State Dept. since it involved a foreign country....
She gave notice to the WH that she was going to do this....
She broke with the Administration....Be happy.
Jeez, get a grip...
modestybl
(458 posts)Her delay makes no sense... why would she wait on what this WH did, she is no longer part of that admin. This just adds to the impression of her being one big politcal wind sock.
The only principle I can se that guides her is the deep-seated belief that she should be president.
Gloria
(17,663 posts)separating now from it...She said she was waiting for a decision and it never came. Now, with the campaign season well on, she still contacted the WH to inform them that she wasn't going to wait for them anymore and she came out with her position.
She is on the right side of this...it has nothing to do with Sanders...no one is really even talking about it anymore...She said she would make her comment soon...and with a week or two, she did.
Biden will be in the same boat if he runs...he will have to either wait or decide to break with the Admin.
They are both in similar situations.....
modestybl
(458 posts)... she is a political windsock. She is always reacting. I don't want to always be pushing a Dem to do the right thing. She has shown terrible judgement where it mattered most in her career (Clinton-care, Iraq). Wall street hedge fund managers are satisfied that she will look for their interests. She doesn't believe that medicare for all, enormous public works projects, free public college, reversal of privatization etc. is possible or desirable. And she won't win.
