Hillary Clinton: Recessions more frequent under Republicans than Democrats

Hillary Clinton: Recessions more frequent under Republicans than Democrats

"SNIP.............

"I know it’s inconvenient for our Republican friends, but the facts do speak for themselves," the former secretary of state said. "Economic growth is stronger under Democratic presidents. Unemployment is lower. The stock market rises faster. Businesses do better, and deficits are smaller. And one of my favorite inconvenient facts is under Republicans, recessions happen four times as frequently as under Democrats."

In this fact-check, we decided to focus the claim that recessions are four times as likely under Republicans as they are under Democrats.

A look at the numbers

The primary research on this question -- and the source cited by the Clinton campaign when we asked -- comes from a paper written by two Princeton University economists, Alan Blinder and Mark Watson.

The paper, published in July 2014, found that the economy tends to do better under Democratic presidents by numerous measures. The authors looked at quarterly economic data from 1947 through mid 2013 and the National Bureau of Economic Research’s official list of recessions and found that Clinton’s claim is pretty much on point.

someone once posted that their father? grandfather? said "Whenever a Republican is President I lose money, whenever a Democrat is president, I do okay, so I always vote Democratic." What could be simpler than that?

she "finally learned about it?" She has probably known at least as long as you, oh wise one.

The article states that she spoke to the issue and cited a source that had done the research. That is how it is supposed to be done. She had the facts, not mere personal observation and surmise.

her a remarkably long time to share her wisdom with us.

All of her recent pronouncements have the air of calculation, such as her recent (finally!) opposition to the TPP. Or was it the Keystone Pipeline? I honestly can't recall which, but her coyness about saying she wasn't going to commit herself until after she's elected President is at best disingenuous. More to the point, it makes her look as if she and her staff are trying very hard to figure out what will garner her the most votes, rather than taking a principled stand on these things.

Back in 2004, DU was awash with charts and information about how everything connected to the economy was worse under Republicans than under Democrats.

Crucify her!

In 2004, DU was awash with charts and information....Yes it was.

Now DU is awash with Hillary hate and right-wing talking points.

Living wage. Union rights. Increasing unemployment benefits. Cutting corporate welfare. Diversity in hiring. These are all issues that Hillary has been supporting for a long, long time.

All of her recent pronouncements have the air of calculation

The rich irony of this statement is that her opponent, DU's Favorite, is the real "calculator" here -- only becoming a Democrat after he decided he wanted to be president and needed the fundraising base of the party.
