(9,086 posts)Or it shouldn't be.
That's the problem with the capitalist mindset. People always trying to get ahead of each other, but we're all falling behind.
When everyone is fighting to get ahead we all end up racing to the bottom.
We need less getting ahead and more advancing together. Less competing, more solidarity.
Instead of worrying about getting ahead, we should ask what is the sustainable path forward that will preserve the earth for future generations, and how can we all thrive by working together.
cyberswede
(26,117 posts)I think it means getting ahead of your budget - keeping your financial head above water, that sort of thing.
That said, it's a nice ad with a good message - that regular people need help, but she didn't say how she plans to do it.
Cheese Sandwich
(9,086 posts)So that means somebody else is on the bottom.
Mrs. Clinton is selling a message of social mobility, building ladders for people to move up in the pig pile. It's just like how companies advertise "opportunities for advancement".
It just can't be a reality for most people. There will always be many people on the bottom of the pyramid. Unless we have some fully revolutionary social changes. I don't expect any candidate to make those changes, but I also don't want to be fed false hopes about "opportunity for advancement".
Instead of addressing income inequality this ad is trying to change the subject to ladders of opportunity. And we've been around this block before: Income inequality is out, "ladders of opportunity" is in.

The major problem we need to focus on is making sure the people on the bottom get paid enough to live a decent life.

(11,608 posts)...of where we are at. It is not about competition with others. Each of us knows what our load is and whether we are moving ahead of it or falling behind. Too many of us feel that when we manage to get a little leeway and lighten our load that something else knocks us back and we suddenly find ourselves struggling even harder. An example may be that we get a small increase in income only to find that our utility bills increase, too, and that our rent goes up.
The clincher is it is stressful and many of us have others that depend on us. We feel responsible for the burdens of our children...of that they often have to go without and do not understand why.

Debt won't hold you back
- If you have student debt, you will be able to refinance your loans at current rates, with an estimated 25 million borrowers receving debt relief. Typical borrowers could save $2,000 over the life of their loans.
Cheers!

(11,945 posts)She nuzzles her way in with her safe, reliable "woman message," then tries to broaden it to approximate Bernie's genuine, lifelong concern for working Americans of all genders and stripes. It's not like she can feel, through her wealth-infused insulation, what life is like for the rest of us. Her production crew has seen the crowds, they've seen "what works," and they'll take anything they can get, even if they don't, for one minute, mean it.
Too bad she comes across forced and insincere, as always. Wonder how many takes they needed to cobble this one together?
But the worst, the absolute worst, is the slogan "Get Ahead." It betrays her basic, oligarchic, rightwing position that life is a contest and the point is to beat out the other guy. To GET. AHEAD. To leave the others behind.
We should not let this woman change what it means, or used to mean, to be a Democrat. Gawd we can do better. We have to do better.

(8,812 posts)Commercials frequently use what's known as "value exchange" to make you feel good about furthering the advertiser's own narrow self-interest.
By associating a pristine wildlife refuge with a dirty fossil fuel provider or a group of bikini-clad young women with a calorie-laden alcoholic beverage, they short-circuit rational thinking and trigger a reward response, making you more likely to support them even though it may be contrary to your own interests or the interests of society at large.

(22,913 posts)It's hard to be more specific on issues than that is in 30 seconds. There's nothing she said that I'm not in favor of. Not as hard hitting on the wealth shift as I would like however - there are bolder prescriptions out there, they just (for now at least) aren't hers. Things like increasing social security...
