GOP advantage on health care complicates if Mitt Romney is Republican nominee

JACKSONVILLE — The candidates have circled the issue for months, throwing bantam punches that mostly missed. During Thursday night's GOP presidential debate, Rick Santorum broke through with an aggressive dismantling of Mitt Romney on health care.

"Your mandate is no different than Barack Obama's mandate. It is the same mandate," Santorum said. "Folks, we can't give this issue away in this election. It is about fundamental freedom."

Romney until that point had delivered a performance that re-established his claim to the Republican nomination — a goal he could leap toward Tuesday by winning Florida's primary.

Santorum was right about this. It takes away a major GOP talking point if Romney is the nominee.

I'd actually say that Romneycare will neutralize any advantage that the Democrats might have had with the voter on this issue.

There are many main stream reporters who routinely using the derogatory term Obamacare. Most Democrats of course support it and wont be affected but moderates/independents could be swayed by an effective attack on the President's heath care initiatives. Romney will have a hard time doing that and sound credible.

The RW has some effective sound bites attacks on this issue. Even though they are wrong its a complex nuanced argument to defend the system that most voters wont understand. Notice that the President did not mention it in the SOTU. Why do you think that was? He knows its not selling well politically at the moment. It will take a long time for the benefits to become apparent but at the moment its much easier to attack it than defend it.

Even though the RW talking points are inaccurate at best, they still were able to make these points and have the uninformed believe them. A Romney nom will spoil what they obviously saw as an advantage on this issue.
