‘We’re tired of sending condolences': Bernie Sanders backs Obama’s push for stronger gun laws

https://www.rawstory.com/2015/10/were-tired-of-sending-condolences-bernie-sanders-backs-obamas-push-for-stronger-gun-laws/

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said on Thursday night that President Barack Obama was right to call for stronger gun safety laws in the wake of the mass shooting at Umpqua Community College.

“I know him well enough to know that this was very personal for him,” Sanders told MSNBC host Chris Hayes. “That he is disgusted, he is angry, he is sick and tired — as we all are — of sending our condolences to the families of people who have been murdered in cold blood.”

The remarks echoed Obama’s statement earlier in the day that “our thoughts and prayers are not enough” following the attack, which was reportedly committed by 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer. Ten people were killed, including the purported gunman, and seven others wounded in the attack.

The senator, who is campaigning for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, called for the elimination of a loophole allowing unlicensed firearm vendors to sell guns at gun shows, and for the implementation of an “instant background check” at regular gun stores.

Being allowed to sue or not sue gun manufacturers for a legal product that everyone knows is made to kill is a red herring.

The issue is how to keep a legal product, explicitly mentioned in our Constitution, out of the hands of people who shouldn't have it. The issue is also how to get mental help for these people before they get to this point.

BTW, I don't even own a gun and I read the Second Amendment literally: it also would not bother me for all gun owners to be regulated. Most lawful gun owners would agree to that, too.

But what safety measures would he actually vote for? I know his campaign sites says he's pro gun control but his actual voting record is mixed.

voted to represent. It does not reflect his personal beliefs.

What he is stating, what he has always stated, reflects his personal beliefs. It's not so much that he's evolved, but that he says what he believes but votes what his constituency wants from him.

It's refreshing, really, to have a candidate who says what he believes, but responds to those who vote for him.

Bernie knows who he works for. He's not afraid to speak his mind, but he never forgets who he works for.
