we are truly united because of this tool. they can use it to collect data on us, sure. but they can't figure out how to control the output of that data.

The printing press was used similarly of course when it first appeared by Ben Franklin among others and received the same kind of reaction from those who had yet to catch up with the progress being made regarding how people communicate.

More technological progress followed and was again used by savvy forward thinking individuals to promote their candidates and candidacies, Radio, TV.

People are always scared of new ideas and one day there will be more progress in communications and the Internet will replace TV as the 'old media'.

As a Progressive I love progress especially before it is taken over and controlled by Corps, and for a while, provides a voice for the PEOPLE.

Social media has been talked about for the last few election cycles, but this time around, it's mature, and it's making a real difference.

Look at Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, and others. People KNOW the media is lying to them, about this, that and the other. People know that the media pushes their preferred angle, whatever that happens to be. And people know that old school media outlets don't have any real value to offer them. And it's not just young people who intrinsically understand this. They're the biggest group, yes, but millions of us in our 40's still feel young and still avail ourselves of the latest technologies.

Incidentally, this is why I think TV spots for candidates are becoming less and less useful for the candidates who air them. And I think they're starting to get that, which is why a lot of spots are aimed at older voters.

With social media, the only thing we need to develop our own opinions and begin discussing/arguing amongst ourselves, are "just the facts". In practice, since the media is not trustworthy, this means getting a few different sources to ensure to the extent possible that we're getting the facts of a given story. And we've got it from there, thanks.

Not only do I write about how to stay safe using these platforms, I use these platforms to get my company's message out.

And, I got my start in writing as a newspaper reporter. It's shocking to me to see how bad the media has become in the 13 years I've been away from it. It's absolutely horrible.

I'm in my 40s, as well, but, in a twist, I was the Mom teaching my son and his school friends about social media when they were in middle school (but I also got to tell them how to stay safer online, too). He's in high school, now, but I've got a daughter who'll start using social media soon so I get to do it all over again.

The in-studio host was talking with a reporter about the circus events surrounding the selection of the next Speaker. I'd characterize their conversation as colloquial-but-stupid. Paraphrased, based on what I remember:

InStudio: So, will this have an effect on the Republicans' chances of getting a budget bill passed? (major uptalk at the end of the question)

Reporter: So, you know, I asked Republican leadership about this, and they were like...

The entire conversation was conducted like that. So's and uh's and likes. And in the end, almost nothing was actually said. I wish I could remember more of it.
