Scotts Miracle-Gro gives big money to Romney PAC

In an election year filled with secret campaign money, the Scotts Miracle-Gro Company has made the unlikely choice to go public with a big political donation.

The Ohio-based company, familiar as the producer of a ubiquitous plant fertilizer, is now a political player, donating $200,000 in June to the Restore Our Future super PAC supporting Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

That makes Miracle-Gro among the first public companies with well-known consumer brands to publicly enter the new world of campaign funding. That world has been reshaped by the 2010 Supreme Court decision Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which allowed direct corporate spending on election campaigns.

Not that I buy a lot of lawn products, but I'm soon going to need a spreadsheet before I go shopping or out to eat.

I had to swear of any Burpee plants (and a few other companies that I relied upon for seedlings) for my garden this year because Monsanto bought the company. It worked out good for me as I went to non GMO seeds -- and I grew things from seed for the first time.

At the time, I went and did research to make sure that Scott's wasn't a Monsanto company -- they weren't, so I felt ok using them for my plants. I don't know if I can do that anymore. What a terrible disappointment.

14. I need to correct myself: Burpee sells Monsanto seeds.

Here is a link for more information: http://www.agardenforthehouse.com/2012/02/keep-monsanto-out-of-your-veggie-patch/

And now the company wants to poke its greedy fingers into our home gardens. In 2005, Monsanto quietly purchased Seminis Seeds for $1.4 billion in cash. Seminis’ seeds are carried by some of the best-known gardening catalogs, including Burpee, Park Seed, John Scheeper and others. The purchase of Seminis, plus the purchase of several smaller seed concerns, has given Monsanto an estimated 40%-80% share of the home vegetable seed market.

I just couldn't take the chance anymore.
