2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAt the Democratic Party Debate Sheryl Crow, Grammy-award winning singer will perform
the National Anthem. As a Democrat, an active environmentalist and avid follower of politics, Crow would like to see environmentalism as a main topic of discussion along with her hope that Democrats will push to help middle class and poorer families by raising the minimum wage.
Crow thinks debates are vital to hear what candidates themselves have to say and it's important for people to be involved in the political system. She will pay close attention to the debate before deciding which of the candidates to support.

(62,444 posts)Instead of breaking for commercials, they could have product placements.
Like, while Hillary answers a fluff question, Bernie opens up a bag of Doritos and starts crunching them. This distracts everyone, and Bernie shares the Doritos and makes some point about income equality. At the end, all the candidates agree on Doritos.

Well, at least it's not the Marseillaise, which glorifies a literally bloody flag.

(57,349 posts)I saw her perform at an outdoor venue in Vermont back in the day.
That was the same day they wouldn't let me in Magic Hat's beer tent because I didn't have my license with me and the guy thought I looked too young to drink.
Good times!

SHERYL CROW, YOU ROCK!

(46,179 posts)Is this a sporting event, or an entertainment venue?
I haven't watched a primary debate in 8 years, so maybe my aging memory is faulty.
Do we usually have a performance to lead off political debates?
Not that I've ever truly been impressed by primary debates, which subtly and not-so-subtly favor some candidates over others, and don't allow an honest, non-biased debate.
At least, not since the early 80s.
Still, if it has to be a dog-and-pony show, I'm sure Crow will do a great job of the national anthem.

(41,140 posts)They mentioned that the National Anthem was also performed at the GOP debate. I don't know if this is the first year for this, and it's definitely getting into the 'sports/Superbowl' entertainment realm.
But our broadcast news is already there, since the late 80s really when the 3 major TV networks put their News Depts. under the Entertainment Divisions to make more revenue after Reagan ended the Fairness Doctrine.
There are downsides and some potential problems clearly, but for now I'm pleased with the choice of Sheryl Crow.
Entertainment Nation, USA I guess.

(63,912 posts)I kinda like the idea, myself. It makes the Dems seem more in touch with ordinary folks and importantly, with a younger group of voters. The GOP is hopelessly out of touch...
The Dems are really rubbing it in the faces of the repubs...heh heh

(17,180 posts)Are the June Taylor Dancers still around? I remember them from the old Jackie Gleason variety show ("Live! From Miami Beach!" Or maybe something subtle like the "Anything Goes" production number from the beginning of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom:

That's perfect. Unfortunately.
I raised the same concern downthread before I read your comment.
This is a waste of time and now they are continuing the transition to absurdity with this. Who the hell set this entertainment nonsense up?

(7,865 posts)When the hell did debates start requiring entertainment like this? I don't mean to be a curmudgeon about all this but isn't this time that would better be spent discussing and debating the issues? Do we really have to play forward the politics as professional sports metaphor this one more step forward?
This is a waste of frigging time.
