(11,175 posts)He's in the low single digits so he needs to take risks to differentiate himself. He might have done better to say: "The American people are impatient with partisan labels. Some hyperpartisan Democrats might not want to hear this, but the fact is that there are millions of good and decent people who are lifelong Republicans but who have watched with growing unease as their party is taken over by the crazy right. I can speak to those people and help them realize that the party has left them just as it left me."
It might even be true. If Chafee did through some incredible upset become the nominee, I'll bet there are some Republicans who would feel comfortable voting for him but who wouldn't support any of the others.
