2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumA thought after watching the debate. Hillary is Perfect for Our Times
After watching the debate, and the media response, here's my own impressions.
She did fine. But totally within the parameters of Accepted Behavior and Opinions in today's Corporate Value System.
Everything about her embodies our homogenized, standardized Branded Corporate Culture. She is the political equivalent of Big Macs, Wal Mart, Souless Lookalike Sprawl....Least Common Denominator Culture, "500 Channels But Nothing On" Media, Franchise Movies, Starbucks Cool Coffeehouses, "Have a Great Day" Voicemail Systems. Sanitized Individuality. You can be an individual, as long as you keep your quirks to yourself.
She is perfect for the Shiny Empty Politics that grows out of that. Say the right thing. Have your principles. But be ready to change your principles at the drop of a hat. Have strong opinions -- as long as they're poll tested. Be feisty, but don't rock any boats. Be smart, but don't think outside the box.
I know. "But she's controversial. The Republicans hate her." But why? Coke and Pepsi. The "Sort of Liberal Democratic Party (TM) brand versus the"Conservative GOP (TM) brand. Pick your team, and ascribe all the evils in the world to the other side. Don't worry though. The game is fixed. But enjoy the show.

(47,803 posts)Actually, it really was a spontaneous thought that occurred to me during the debate.
Probably not a unique thought, but it was my honest gut reaction.

(47,803 posts)If she's not running for President I'd have no problem with her.
But she represents the brand culture in which everything is supposed to fit into an acceptable mold. And that is not conducive to positive change.

The problem is that she has to be to even have a chance to get elected. I don't particularly blame her--I blame the voters.
And being where she is makes her "electable". Pretty vague, but given the ignorance of too many voters and the disappointing apathy of non-voters, it is true.

(5,815 posts)Glomming onto you with a thought I've had since yesterday. Reading some of the media commentary about the debates, I thought some of the metrics being tossed out by pundits were interesting. Clinton was being praised for deflecting and "pivoting" deftly. In short, it was considered a positive value to avoid answering a question.
Part of the rationale for believing she did well seemed to be how well she pulled the wool over voters' eyes, not whether or not her policies and vision would be good for the country.
Granted, most politicians attempt this, and Clinton is very polished at it. But to actively consider it a good in our political context by the media organizations who are ostensibly supposed to be about rooting out facts and objective truth . . .
It struck me as a little funny how pundits didn't even pretend they were bothered by obfuscation. It's a solid political recommendation to them.
I think both Sanders and Clinton "won" in that they accomplished what they needed to at this point in the campaign.
But it's sort of very weird that the praise being heaped on Clinton has a strong flavor of, "Wasn't she an amazing bullshitter?! It was awesome!"
I mean . . . ok. If that's what you're looking for as the American system groans and creaks like the Titanic readjusting its angle of descent.

While Bernie's in it only for the people.
