Clinton-Castro? Many Democrats Like the Ring of It

If the buzz about Julián Castro's vice presidential prospects wasn't deafening before last week, it is now.

Castro's endorsement of Hillary Clinton for president — delivered at a festive rally Thursday in his hometown of San Antonio — breathed more life than ever into the idea that he's her running mate-in-waiting for the Democratic ticket. For supporters of Castro, the U.S. housing secretary and former San Antonio mayor, the event provided the clearest glimpse yet at what a Castro-Clinton pairing could look like — and they loved what they saw.

"When you look at Julián’s incredible rise, how could he not be at the top of the list?" asked Christian Archer, Castro's political chief when he was mayor. "There’s a clear message when you do your first big rally [in Texas] and it’s right here in San Antonio.”

"That looked like a winning American ticket," Archer added, guessing that some who came to the rally were just as excited to see Castro as Clinton.

Now all I've gotta do is paste a bunch of links to some awesome feel-good pics of Hillary and Castro, so as one scrolls down absorbing the awesomeness of the pics it feels almost like an orgasm is coming, and it'll for sure be a winning ticket for this instant.

While I like Castro plenty, and think he has a bright future, I would be a little hesitant to have him in the VP slot so early. Biden and Gore both brought great credentials in the fields of foreign policy that would have made me perfectly comfortable for them to take the Oval Office in case of a catastrophe befalling the sitting president. I don't know anything at all about Castro's foreign policy experience, and as an American abroad, I know only too well how vital it is that the VP be well-versed in trouble spots around the globe.

He'd bring some flash to the ticket, no matter who is heading it, but I'd like to see some credentials in a field that is at the top of my priorities list. Gore and Biden did us a lot of good on foreign policy. I'm willing to believe Castro could do the job, but I'd want to feel perfectly OK about offering it to him first.

Of course, after the Palin fiasco, the Republicans would have nothing to hit us with, even if we ran Daffy Duck as VP, as Daffy Duck had as much or more business being a heartbeat away from the Oval Office as Palin did.

This time, it is Julian Castro, Secretary of Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) – who may be positioning himself for a nomination to be the next Democratic vice president – providing the massive assist to criminal bankers (emphasis mine):

Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase appeared to score a significant victory Tuesday after the Department of Housing and Urban Development suggested it won't punish lenders for major crimes committed by their corporate parents.

The announcement concerns a requirement that lenders in HUD's mortgage insurance program certify they haven't been convicted of violating federal antitrust laws or other serious crimes. Citi and JPMorgan in May pleaded guilty to felony charges that they broke federal antitrust laws for their traders’ participation in a years-long scheme to manipulate currency markets for profit. Both companies own banks that make mortgages that are later insured by the HUD-overseen Federal Housing Administration.

But on Tuesday, Secretary Julián Castro's housing agency proposed modifying the required certification in a way that would apply only to HUD-registered lenders. The lenders' parent companies wouldn't be on the hook, thus seemingly enabling Citi and JPMorgan's HUD-registered units to continue certifying that they haven't pleaded guilty to federal antitrust charges.

She's a great speaker and knows her policy and inside mechanics. A great Democratic advocate, quick on her feet and dynamically expressive. Not canned at all.
