2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBill and Hillary Clinton: The Greatest Political Couple of a Lifetime
The greatest political couple of my lifetime, and certainly the greatest in United States political history since Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and before then since John and Abigail Adams.
Both are brilliant and ever dedicated to public service, and neither was to the manner born as were political families like the Adamses, the Roosevelts, the Kennedys and the Bushes. Nor was either a product of a cheering media, such as was the made-by-the-Right grade-B Hollywood actor Ronald Reagan.
And Bill got to the White House detested by the press and pundit classesin short, he got there in spite of them, rather than because of them. And nobody ever could handle a political crowd or any individual more effortlessly than himhe was, and remains, the platinum politician of my lifetime.
When the Clinton Global Initiative and its attending Foundation became forces on an international scale with greater significance than even the Nobel Foundation and the United Nations, the press and pundit classes became spit jealousbecause none of their anointed darlings, such as members of the Bush familycould ever have had such lasting achievements. With the 24/7 anti-Clinton invective of the press and pundit classes, accusing the Clintons of anything and everything, through silly impeachment charges through influence peddling and premeditated murderboth Bill and Hillary remain survivors of it all.
When Hillary declared formally this past April, everyone who was anyone in the Democratic Party knew that she was going to be the heavy favorite for the nomination. She had more than PAID HER DUES. She was the runner-up for the Democratic nomination in 2008, and lost by just a scant less than 42,000 votes (with her tallies in Michigan and Florida not being counted)with now Vice President Biden being nowhere near that finish line. Then she brought her forces to work on behalf of electing as President her chief rival Barack Obama, who then offered her the highest of all possible cabinet positions (much higher than the role of a Vice President, whose function is essentially a seat-filler, which is why very few have gone on to win independently of the President they represent) as Secretary of State.
In that role, she performed brilliantlythrough restoring diplomacy tarnished almost irreparably after the Bush years, to the capture of Bin Laden under Obamas aegisand through it all, even through the tragedy at Benghazi, she held very high marks with the consensus of the American People. No one then cared anything about how she handled her E-mails.
She came to this campaign as the only game in town. The GOP Congress, the press and pundit classes knew they had to destroy her, otherwise no member of the GOP Clown car could succeed. They knew they would need to stir up her left flank, and so the feel the Bern movement was born, by way of Republican operatives working through progressive websites such as this one (this is not in reference to the Democratic Underground). Thus, with Senator Sanders now leading in New Hampshire and closing in in Iowa, and with their 24/7 attacks on her from congressional committees with unlimited government money at their disposal, inventing an E-mail scandal when there isnt any, these forces feel certain that they have already destroyed Hillary.
But little do they know the Clinton resolve. She, like her husband before her, will be there after the last dog dies. If I had to bet against any pollster, and press or pundit class member, or even, if they are so foolish, New Hampshire and Iowa early voters in the Sanders camp, I would still take my odds with the Clintons. Bill Clinton didnt need either Iowa or New Hampshire to become United States President. And neither will Hillary.
Im betting that the state that first says yes to Hillary and no to Sanders will be the state that first gets it right. Because I have no doubt, in spite of the press and pundits and pollsters and websites like this one [this is not in reference to the Democratic Underground] largely spitting on Hillary every day, that it is she who will be the Democratic nominee, and she who will became our first woman President.
And like her husband before her, IN SPITE OF THE PRESS AND PUNDIT CLASSES, and maybe also in spite of early primary and caucus results, because she has the unique Clinton determination.
Because unlike the press and pundit classes and congressional committees and wildly bizarre Sanders supporters cheering on her demise, she really will be therelike 2008until the last dog dies. But unlike 2008, with no rival like the spectacular now President Obama, this time she will emerge victorious.
Im just waiting for the first state to get to report that it was the first to appear in her columngiving rise to the first woman President of the United States. And whether that is neither New Hampshire nor even Iowa doesnt matter. The state that first calls it for her will be the state that got it right.

Don't believe what you just read? Well, with the focus on New Hampshire right now, let's do a little flashback 2008:
Hillary Rodham Clinton Upsets Barack Obama in New Hampshire
All 3 Clintons [Bill, Hillary, Chelsea] spent 7 days [1 week exactly] criss-crossing New Hampshire to pull off a huge upset against surging Barack Obama:
Donald Trump and Sarah Palin are pure stagecraft. But they arent smart. They just arent. But the Clintons. Man. Now THEY are both stagecraft *AND* smart. Brilliant people. Really. And they play to win.
And finally, they can now adopt all the progressive positions needed to steer the United States through the 21st Century. And if weve learned anything from the Clintons in the last 30 years, its that you want them fighting for you.
Hillarys plans are the most comprehensive and progressive of any 2016 candidate to date.
But what I love about the Clintons is
They are STAGECRAFT AT ITS FINEST. The whole package. Hillarys New Hampshire victory speech proves it. If let back in the White House, the Clintons will finally dismantle the GOP.
Get ready to rumble, Bernie!!
Hillary Rodham Clinton:
I come tonight with a very, very full heart. And I want especially to thank New Hampshire. Over the last week, I listened to you and, in the process, I found my own voice.
(APPLAUSE, WHISTLING, CHANTING)
I felt like we all spoke from our hearts, and I am so gratified that you responded. Now, together, lets give America the kind of comeback that New Hampshire has just given me!!!

No, sorry, you don't really know what was going on. For those at the top, yes, it was glorious just like the Reagan years were for those at the top. It is very similar to how it is now for those at the top under the Obama 'recovery'.
But the reality is NAFTA, an increase in the drug war and mass incarceration, welfare reform, horrid banking reform, the allowance of monopolization of the media, and so much more neoliberal bullshit that we are now 30 years later seeing the negative consequences thereof.

(47,803 posts)It was an irrational boom fueled by the emergence of New Technology.
But look at the cumulative damage that was being done, and the lies that were being sold back then (No more recessions ever in the New Economy. Call Centers will replace factory jobs. etc.).....It was an economic cocaine rush, and Bill Clinton was one of the pushers.
The Clintons gave lots more support to American families during the 1990s, which helped our economy flourish. To simply say the Clintons success in the 1990s is solely because of the dot.com boom is simplistic. Yes, it was part of the reason, but it was far from all of the reason.

(246 posts)Im not going to mislead anybody. Politics is really hard. And it is harder for women. Theres a double standard, and you cant complain about it. You just have to accept it, and be smart enough to navigate it. And you have to have a pretty tough skin. To paraphrase a favorite quote from Eleanor Roosevelt: If a woman wants to be in politics, she has to have the skin of a rhinoceros. So occasionally Ill be sitting somewhere and Ill be listening to someone perhaps not saying the kindest things about me. And Ill look down at my hand and Ill sort of pinch my skin to make sure it still has the requisite thickness I know Eleanor Roosevelt expects me to have.

What are the odds? What are the chances? Has it ever happened before in human history? Will it ever happen again?
Both Bill and Hillary were not born into financially well-off families, nor politically connected families. Together, they built the Clinton name from scratch using only their natural given talent, intelligence, and determination.
This is already the most remarkable story of any couple in history. In 2016, lets make it that much more remarkable.

(2,406 posts)There is not any gene that makes someone presidential material.
Personal qualities are important, to be sure, but so are money, connections, work, and chance. Especially chance. Obama is president today, but given a slightly different hand, he'd be an Illinois state senator or a University of Chicago professor. Similarly, it's easy to imagine that Hillary Clinton would today be a partner at a law firm in Little Rock, Arkansas. Or, if she hadn't met Bill, maybe it would be New Haven, CT.
They are not special people. And this is not f**king North Korea. We do not worship politicians.

(27,247 posts)were Bush's governor brother, Bush's campaign co-chair who was also in charge of counting the votes in Florida, the disruption of vote-counting in Miami-Dade and elsewhere by Republican operatives, the delay tactics by a Florida judge who ordered truckloads of ballots sent to Tallahassee but who had no intention of examining them, and last, but certainly not least---
The 5 Supreme Court "justices" who voted in favor of Bush, including Cheney's duck-hunting buddy Antonin Scalia (who had been appointed to the Court when Bush's father was Vice President), and Sandra Day O'Connor, who could not hide her displeasure at the thought of a Gore victory.
JTShroyer
(246 posts)if the left hadn't been riding the 1990s Clinton high and thought it OK to turn their backs on them for Nader because they thought there was no way Gore would lose to idiot Bush. Well guess what happened.
If only a fraction of the Nader supporters had gone for Gore in Florida, it would have been a clear Gore victory.
But please, left-wing, keep making Hillary weaker for the general election. It's what the Repubs want (again)!
Art_from_Ark
(27,247 posts)because Bush's campaign co-chair stopped the vote counting when her guy was ahead, and the US Supreme Court upheld that action.
It was obvious that the fix was in. You are trying to deflect the blame from where it actually lies-- the coordinated actions of numerous players to ensure that Gore did not win Florida.
JTShroyer
(246 posts)But if even a fraction of voters Nader voters had gone for Gore in Florida, it wouldn't have been a toss-up to begin with. That's the point. The left-wing blew it by turning their backs on the Clintons (Bill's VP Al Gore) and voting for Nader instead. Thanks to the left-wing liberals, we had Bush in there after 9/11. Oh, and just think how much further along we would be on global warming if Gore had been in the White House since 2000. Our country would be in amazing shape right now. But NOOO. We had to thumb our noses at the Clintons.
