Jim Webb to quit Democratic primary

Former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb plans to announce on Tuesday that he will drop out of the Democratic presidential race in favor of a potential independent presidential run, a source familiar with his thinking confirmed to MSNBC.

Citing frustration with Party leadership and what he sees as a corrupt political class, Webb will announce at the National Press Club this afternoon that he is withdrawing from any consideration of being the Democratic Party’s nominee.

if the Va Dems hadn't nominated someone that voters really saw as a relevant alternative we would have been stuck with George Allen AND possibly wouldn't have Senator Tim Kaine.

I didn't work on Webb's campaign but I did show up at his launch, shook his hand, and wished him good luck.

Allen had to be defeated. Webb's 2009 votes were crucial for razor-thin passage of ACA, stimulus and others, and a couple years earlier as a newly-elected Senator he did not hesitate to take Bush-Cheney to task over the Iraq fiasco when others were too intimidated to speak out. Webb has an independent streak to be sure but is certainly no right-winger or neocon for that matter.

please do get started. I'd like to know exactly why you believe that Webb thinks he's so special when every non-partisan on the planet knows that Debbie Waterboy has anointed Hillary as the special one.

something he cannot achieve. Every effort is being made to prevent anyone from challenging the Party's choice.

Now it's up to the people to show them they are supposed to be working for us.

They just don't seem to get that.

The party needs new leadership, they are losing elections after the voters hand them victories.

So the people will have to take over and put people who represent them in power.

I prefer an honest person, like Webb who doesn't fudge and avoid questions on where he stands on the issues. I know where Webb stands which provides me with the option of agreeing or disagreeing with him, which I do on many issues.

is they are all prima donnas. Well "all" is an exaggeration but not by much. Webb could have actually participated in the process and made a small but significant difference instead of being a crybaby quitter.

about his country. And when his own party betrayed him, he had the guts to stand up and say so.

I doubt he wants to spend the time, money and energy to play a small role in this race.

Especially when he sees the process, the rigged system, the money that so corrupts the process, as have so may others to the point where now, people are really standing up against it.

Because only the people can change the course we are on. And if they don't, it will only get worse.

He may feel he has a better chance of making a difference outside the party structure by speaking the truth. We so need more truth in this country.

He barely did anything to campagin for the Presidency and didn't even bother to try and get on the ballot in his home state. He barely had any appearances, made almost no hirings of staff, and expects people to anoint him?

I wish he would stay in the primary and talk about nothing but his criminal justice proposals. For the most part many of his thoughts in that area are the class of the field.

He was my senator. He took down George Allen. He's been an advocate for veterans and criminal justice reform for years. He also identified the problems of using prison as treatment for mental illness.

Everyone was looking for the next Democratic centrist at that time, one that could compete in rural America. The fact that he can barely get on the debate stage shows that the party has moved significantly left in that time.

Dean was who recruited all of those Blue Dogs who came in in 2006 and 2008. The party ousted him because we don't actually want conservative D votes enough to earn them.

Policy, to get anywhere in the party today. He's honest, and didn't want to be used to drag the party one way or another. He is right and was right on the Iraq disaster.

I like honest people even if I don't agree with them. At least they're not insulting my intelligence by dancing around the issues.
