Kucinich was a fringe candidate in 2008. Sanders is not.

They are running on essentially the same platform.

Kucinich got about 1% of the primary vote back then. Even the most die-hard Clinton supporter admits Sanders will do (much) better than that.

The Democratic party has moved to the left. Farther to the left than it has been in Sanders's career. That's why he is running now and didn't before.

All in all 2015 is probably the farthest left the Democratic Party as a whole has ever been.

Yes, the Democratic Party is shifting leftward. I do not think we're ready for a Sanders as President yet, but the shift does appear to be apparent and, with luck, permanent.

Still, Kucinich was a fringe candidate for more reasons than his platform. He had no chance, ever, of becoming President.

Sanders probably won't become the nominee, either. The shift isn't far enough among voters for that to happen. But, the shift is happening, and that's a promising thing, in my opinion. A hopeful thing.
