The issue itself will not decide the election. However this response and many others will add to a negative image of character / likability that will decide it. The whole "we are above your scrutiny and don't have to answer your little questions" thing will do them in.

I do not know what is in the returns, so it could be that the Romneys are making the best move available. If they did not pay income taxes in some of those years while pulling down a king's ransom sheltered in overseas accounts, releasing the info could make it even worse. But it is not good or going to get better as it is.

It is very likely that they have no better choices, because if they did, they would have taken another option by now. So if the choice is between seeming secretive and imperious, or seeming like a tax manipulator / deadbeat, they choose imperious. One could potentially survive imperious in some elections, but this is the wrong election for that, the people are kind of over rich people having all the advantages at the moment, so they won't get past this.

It is important to consider that in these races, it is almost always image over substance, (unless the substance is really, really ugly).

Not to mention the hypocrisy of his demands during past campaigns for releasing tax records and then implying that there's questionable stuff in them.

Enough to decide the election? No. But definitely enough to leave a bad taste in our mouths that will (hopefully) linger through Election Day.

There are so many other reasons why the man and his running mate are total douche-nozzles. This is just one of many reasons why they won't win. The vast majority of voters won't know or care that he didn't release his taxes.

Of course, there are people who live in the opposite bubble. Actually, there are lots of different bubbles.

I had a conversation recently with someone who, although he doesn't even know Mr. Obama's opponent's name, was convinced that Mr. Obama is going to lose in the biggest landslide since 1984 Reagan. All because someone told him that they had heard it from a friend who got that from the TV machine.

When I laughed and laughed and laughed, he thought I must have lost my mind. I asked him if he wanted me show him how the latest polls, including the Fox News poll, had Mr. Obama ahead by several points. He said "they take polls about these things before the elections?"

Now there's a bubble that I try to stay away from.

We must hound him non stop just like they did about the birth certificate. WE CANNOT LET THIS DIE OUT. No one should be even close to holding office who snubs his nose at paying taxes....LET ALONE BE PRESIDENT.

Between refusing to show his income tax returns and choosing a running mate with even less of a business background than Obama, Romney's sway with independent voters (the only true weapon he had against Obama) is deteriorating irreversibly.
