O'Malley: Hard to point to example where U.S. boots on the ground gave desired result in last 15 yrs
SIOUX CITY | ISIS must be stopped, and the U.S. should support the coalition to defeat the Syria-based Islamic militant group, former Maryland governor Martin OMalley said Friday.
But the Democratic presidential candidate hesitated to support a move that would place U.S. troops on the ground, pointing to past examples of U.S. interference in Middle Eastern affairs.
We have to stay involved, but we also have to be very, very cautious because its hard to point to an example where putting American boots on the ground gave us the desired result in the last 15 years, OMalley said.
OMalleys comments came hours after the White House announced that Democratic President Barack Obama had authorized the deployment of fewer than 50 special operations U.S. troops in the Kurdish-controlled region of Syria.
If elected, OMalley said hed like to find ways to cut off ISIS finances and stop its propaganda.

O'Malley echoes Sanders, Obama rejecting Clinton call for Syrian no-fly zones
"No-fly zones sound attractive, but no-fly zones also have to be enforced. And given the fact that the Russian air force is in the airspace over Syria, this could lead to an escalation of Cold War proportions because of an accident, and I don't think that's in the best interests of the United States," O'Malley said. "There are many fights in this world. I don't believe that every fight is our fight."
