Hillary Clinton Hesitates On Expanding Social Security

Hillary Clinton Hesitates On Expanding Social Security
Daniel Marans
The Huffington Post

Asked again whether she would expand Social Security benefits, Clinton conceded that she would expand benefits for some of the program's poorest beneficiaries, specifically citing widows and single women.

"I want to enhance the benefits for the poorest recipients of Social Security,” Clinton said. “We have a lot of women on Social Security, particularly widowed and single women, who didn't make a lot of money during their careers and they are impoverished and they need more help from the Social Security system."

“The allergy that Secretary Clinton showed toward the idea of Social Security expansion is honestly incredibly disappointing," said Neil Sroka, a spokesman for the progressive group Democracy for America. "Social Security expansion is a major priority for 'Warren Wing' voters. She showed an extreme reluctance to even use the term.”

Democracy for America, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and MoveOn.Org are calling on candidates to speak to the concerns of the Democratic party's "Warren Wing," or supporters of progressive Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).

It is not clear what Clinton would do to improve Social Security benefits for widows and single women.

and that she is still a center-right neoliberal corporatist democrat who intends to continue the same failed policies of the last 35 years.

3. Women have legitimately gotten a raw deal from Social Security

It's a real issue because benefits are based on lifetime earnings. If women take time off to raise children, they lose. If they get paid less than men, they loose. There are things that can be done to correct this, but Mrs. Clinton hasn't formally supported any of them. In this respect she's right and she should share specifics.

What's more troubling is her talk around targeting lower income recipients. That's plain and simple means testing when we should be looking at expanding the program for everyone.

...or otherwise chooses a less materialistic existence, they are, in effect, punished for doing so.

It's bad for women, to be sure, but it's just unfair to a good many of us men, too.

In the end, there should be a base line level of security in retirement that doesn't require having been a hedge fund manager.

Thank you for all of the good posts.

1. Women should be paid the same as men, full stop, period.

2. If either parent (and let's face it it's vastly more often women) take time out of the work force to care for the family, that should be credited as work.

And point #2 doesn't address for the hit in income women sustain by not being in the workforce 100% of the time. Just talking time off for pregnancy can delay raises, promotions, etc and that will all impact what they get paid out for retirement.

There's options to address, but let's not conflate it too much with Mrs. Clinton's talk of targeting the poor. That's straight up means testing.

Social Security is for everybody. Expand benefits for everyone so that the ones who need it most get the help they need. But they should not be singled out as the deserving poor.

Hillary makes my blood run cold on this.

Believe them at your own risk.

Think: "Comfortable Shoes" vs TPP. Manditory private insurance vs Public Option.

Etc.
