Hillary Clinton Polls: Clinton Starting To Pull Away From Bernie Sanders, Cements Status As Frontrunner
Nathan Francis
Hillary Clinton is making a big jump in the polls, crossing the 50 percent threshold and appearing to stop the momentum from challenger Bernie Sanders.
............Now it appears Hillary Clinton is putting a stop to that momentum. A new poll from NBC News finds that she had 50 percent support among Democratic voters, growing her lead after challengers Jim Webb and Lincoln Chafee dropped out of the race and with Vice President Joe Biden officially ruling out a run.
.........................
With Biden no longer asked about, Clintons numbers have inched higher, pushing her back to the 50 percent mark among voters who are Democratic or lean Democratic, for the first time since we began polling on the primary race back in April. But Sanders continues to hold onto a solid segment of the Democratic electorate, getting the backing of 30 percent leaned Democratic voters. Martin OMalley and Larry Lessig, with just 1 percent support, have not been able to make a dent in their levels of support.
....................................
Hillary Clinton fared even better in other polls. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released Wednesday showed even higher support for the former Secretary of State. In the poll, Clinton reached 53 percent support, opening up a 20-point lead over Bernie Sanders who registered 33 percent support.
Clinton appears to be pulling away at a time when the Republican race is growing even closer. Donald Trump, who has been seen as the frontrunner for several weeks dating back to the summer, has seen his lead over Ben Carson dwindle. The Reuters/Ipsos poll this week found that Trump had 29 percent support while Carson had 27 support, within the polls margin of error.
..............
Even amid the attacks, Hillary Clinton appears to be building her support both in polls and among voters in key early voting states of New Hampshire and Iowa. While Bernie Sanders once made strong showings in the polls in these states, reports indicate that Clinton is gaining momentum both in the form of appearances and key endorsements, and could soon be pulling away.

(13,340 posts)And the previous included Biden. I don't think you can draw any conclusions from looking at the the IBD/TIPP polls by themselves, and you can't compare them directly to other polls. It's all about the aggregate, and for certain, the gap has increased between Clinton and Sanders over the last several weeks.
Will that continue? I think the numbers will likely stabilize, more or less, with Clinton around 50 and Sanders at 30, at least for now.
jfern
(5,204 posts)Not just IBD/TIPP.

(13,340 posts)Generally you can't compare individual polls, especially between pollsters. You really have to look at the aggregate. I could just as easily cherry pick a poll that shows a MASSIVE gap between Clinton and Sanders, but that would be just as specious. you really have to look at the aggregate numbers. That's why aggregate sites have been much better at predicting outcomes than individual pollsters. And the aggregate says that Clinton opened up her lead some.

(23,730 posts)they forget that most of that support isn't STRONG support, that it's not people running around with "Hillary" signs and knocking on doors and defending her record (whatever it's supposed to be that day) but people on the street only vaguely cognizant that there's a primary going on
Sanders is ahead in NH and even if he loses NH-IA-SC he's not gonna stop fighting until June 7--because CA-MT-NJ-NM-SD aren't states he would ever think of ignoring, let alone ignore because of some primary schedule
the more people hear about Sanders the higher his numbers get: "Clinton's good week" after the triple punch of a collected debate performance, plus Gowdy Doody's 11-hour shitfest, plus Biden's pullout saw Sanders go up as much as she did; her bounce is most likely just a reshuffling of supporters between establishment candidates--people who're happy with the status quo, or just kept nicely unaware of any other option than one well-coiffed neolib hawk or the other

I am voting in the primary, and convinced my entire family to vote for the candidate with integrity who doesn't take huge sums of money from billionaires, Wall St, and the private prison industry. Who doesn't have a superPAC. Who doesn't vote for needless wars. Who doesn't flip flop on major issues. So we're squarely in Bernie's camp. FIVE younger than 30-y.o voters for BERNIE

(1,561 posts)You do realize the system is already broken. SCOTUS or no SCOTUS, the system does not work for the majority of people. This is why Bernie is calling for a political revolution. Voting for status quo candidates because they might win does not help anybody except the top 1%. When you are people going to get it.
We had Clintons and Bushes for the last 20 years...looked out how well that has worked for us...it hasn't. It's like Clinton supporters suffer from Stockholm syndrome...yes give me more of the same shit policies that haven't help me, more wars, more neoliberal economics, and greater income equality.

(1,415 posts)I've been skeptical of HRC just recently , she appears to be pulling away in the Primary and kicking GOP butt in the GE polls.. its still early but i have a feeling we will do well , whether Hillary or Bernie... you guys see Trump.. he is blasing his fellow GOpers more than our guys and gals... He blasted Rubio pretty badly today.. and i think its working.. I think the GOP may nominate Trump.. if so .. we should get ready for him.. i wouldnt underestimate him and I don't think our candidates do.. as he will be lucky to get 20% of the latino vote but he will get some indies etc.. we must be ready for him...or if we get Cruz by some chance or a Trump/Cruz or Trump/Carson same thing

but you are correct. They are nothing like each other. Sanders is a true progressive who's not going to sell us down the river, get us into a war, or agree to a crappy trade deal because he's been bought by the corporations. Huge differences between them you're absolutely right.

(5,614 posts)Where was Sanders then and where was Hillery? The GOPuke establishment is having kittens as Carson/Trump drive their boys into the dust. The Dem establishment is in much better shape being blessed with a candidate they all love.
Sanders is and always was a long shot from the outset. However, like the Elton John song says, we're still standing. The status quo, business as usual, BUSINESS AS USUAL, cadres in the establishment wing of the Party has all the advantages, almost all the money and almost all the favorable coverage in the MSM.
Yet, we're still standing. See you folks when the actual votes start being counted.

In the much smaller Democratic field, the 11Alive News poll shows Hillary Clinton with a crushing lead, with 73 percent support among likely Democratic primary voters. Bernie Sanders follows with 16 percent support, then Martin O'Malley with 4 percent. Those results lead SurveyUSA pollsters to conclude "Sanders is not today competitive in Georgia".
"If you're at 73 percent with a year to go in the campaign, you're feeling really good about Georgia," Democrat strategist Tharon Johnson told 11Alive's Jennifer Leslie. Johnson says Clinton's camp will need Georgia--for votes and money--if Sanders has a strong showing in Iowa and New Hampshire. .....

PPP(D) iowa Poll-Clinton 57% Sanders 25%
On the Democratic side in Iowa Hillary Clinton has really reestablished her dominance, getting 57% to 25% for Bernie Sanders, 7% for Martin O'Malley, and 1% for the now departed Lawrence Lessig. Clinton's seen a 15 point improvement in her net favorability rating over the last six weeks, from +42 at 65/23 in mid-September to now +57 at 74/17. Sanders has continued to become more popular too, going from 56/20 to 62/20.
Clinton is really dominating with several key groups in Iowa. Among seniors she's up 74/13 and with women she's up 61/21. She leads across the board with the various constituencies we track but it is tighter with younger voters (43/40), men (51/31), and voters who identify themselves as 'very liberal' (48/30).
