2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumRobert Booker: ‘Bernie Sanders' abducted at rally
Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders did not come to the rally at Carleos Lounge in the Old City during the Democratic debate a few weeks ago, but in his place was a lifesize cardboard likeness that created quite a bit of excitement after the event ended.
The cutout became the center of more buzz than Clint Eastwoods empty chair during the 2012 presidential campaign. Such a commotion was created that half a dozen police cars raced to protect it from over-zealous admirers.
I had no idea my evening would end with such high drama.
At the rally I watched as the Sanders supporters enthusiastically applauded and yelled approvingly at his every statement. They gave only polite applause to Hillary Clinton and the other candidates. While the younger people for the most part acted civilly, an older man and woman loudly let loose with a curse word as the former first lady gave her views.
(snip)
As I was leaving the gathering I heard someone yell, Hey! Hey! Stop!
Someone was fleeing carrying what seemed to be a cardboard cutout. The culprit dashed up Willow Avenue toward the area around my car. The action did not fully register with me until I saw the flashing police lights converge on the area.
Just before I got to my car I saw the blue-lighted cars blocking the street. The police had retrieved the purloined cutout, and one of the women who had worked the registration desk was holding it. I just had to stop and make sure of my thoughts, and watched until she turned around and I saw the face of Bernie Sanders.
What was that 911 call like to get the cops in such a dither?
Dispatcher: Whats your emergency, sir?
Caller: They just took Bernie Sanders from the Democratic Party rally at Carleos Lounge on South Central.
Dispatcher: Bernie Sanders? Which way did they go?
Caller: They were heading east on Willow. Please hurry.
Dispatcher: Stay on the line; help is on the way.
I wasnt close enough to hear that the police had to say, but I imagine one might have said, We wasted gas in six cars for this?

Are we certain it was actually a Bernie admirer, who "purloined" his cardboard cut-out?

seems like he just got a bit over excited which is understandable, Bernie has that affect on people.

oh wait, I think we're already there. never mind.
Thanks for your good-humored post Uncle Joe. I think we all need a bit more
of these, and less acrimony.

They should have been thoroughly briefed by The Plumbers, before trying such
