A Mystery Speaker for Thursday? . . . Could It Be . . . Her?

National Review:

Buried deep in the convention schedule released Monday is a vague reference to a mystery speaker scheduled for the event’s final evening. “To Be Announced” has a prime speaking slot late in the Thursday program.

...snip...

The good folks at the Journal offer a poll of potential mystery guests, but most are unrealistic: former Georgia Democratic senator Zell Miller, well-armed rocker Ted Nugent, CIA Director David Petraeus, former First Lady Nancy Reagan, heroic pilot Chesley Sullenberger . . .

. . . or Sarah Palin.

The more you think about the idea, the more it makes sense — whatever controversy and intense reactions Sarah Palin may bring to whatever she does, if there is one thing we know she does exceptionally well, it is give convention speeches! This wouldn’t mean turning her into an official Romney surrogate or putting her in a Romney cabinet or anything like that — just giving one of the Republican figures most beloved by the grassroots — or at least a large and vocal segment of the grassroots — a chance to fire up the base and discuss why it is so important that everyone pull out all the stops for Romney.

I cannot conceive that the Romney campaign would be insane enough to bring her in and (now that she's "gone rogue&quot risk a loose cannon speech (or worse, making Romney look bland by comparison) for the sake of getting a rise out of the crowd. But then, I wonder if they're feeling sufficiently desperate that anything's worth trying.

A clearly agitated Sarah Palin openly discusses the overthrow of the Republican party on Fox News. Wait, what?

My guess is that they found a former Dem, who is possibly of color or female, to show how utterly ALLURING Romney is.. and that he's winning people over. Lieberman is old news... any other recent turncoats??

OR could be the curmudgeonly libertarian Clint Eastwood.

Trump.

They teased that just because he isn't there, doesn't mean he won't "appear". I am wondering if he will appear on a big screen and do the tired "You're Fired" bit.

Remember when CNN jumped the shark by using some freaky technology to project a 3D image onto the stage with Wolf?

Fat lot of good it did since the audience was still watching everything on 2D screens.

If they do something like a hologram of St. Ronnie they will be the laughing stock of the entire world for a month.

No comedian in the world could possibly pass up taking shots at that.

I was making jokes like that almost thirteen years ago. Quoting myself from someplace unworthy of mention, envisioning a dark and cynical future for the US which now appears whimsical and far less awful than what actually happened:

President Thurmond stuns an apathetic nation by announcing that he will run for reelection in 2004, and as a publicity stunt, the Republican Party nominates a computer-animated Teddy Roosevelt as his running mate. This is really a plan to have Newt Gingrich appointed Thurmond's vice president after the election.

Thanks to Townhall.com's Guy Benson, one of the hotter stories of the morning here in Tampa seems to be that actor/director/American icon Clint Eastwood is reportedly coming to the Republican National Convention and may be the "to be announced" speaker on Thursday night's schedule.

The list in the OP:

Georgia Democratic senator Zell Miller-Not a big enough star power anymore
rocker Ted Nugent-too much of a risk of what he might say, has already caused damage
CIA Director David Petraeus-I don't believe Petraeus even retired would speak at a convention
former First Lady Nancy Reagan-Too frail, although could do it by satellite
heroic pilot Chesley Sullenberger-As someone mentioned, he support Obama
former Governor Sarah Palin-See Ted Nugent

Besides Eastwood the only other person it could be is Donald Trump. It has to be one of those two. Trump would be a bit of a risk with the number of times he puts his foot in his mouth (and talks out his asshole). Eastwood would be the safe choice.
