2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHillary wouldn't lie on purpose would she? "Since we last debated in Las Vegas..."
"...nearly 3,000 people have been killed by guns. Two hundred children have been killed. This is an emergency."
She said that in the same time period there have been 21 mass shootings, "including one last weekend in Des Moines where three were murdered."
THE FACTS: The claim appears to be unsupported on all counts.
The Gun Violence Archive has recorded 11,485 gun deaths in the U.S. so far this year, an average of just under 1,000 per month, making Clinton's figure appear to be highly exaggerated. The archive had more detailed data for children and teenagers, showing 70 from those age groups killed by firearms since the Democratic candidates debated Oct. 13 - not 200 as she claimed.
Asked to explain the discrepancy, Clinton's campaign pointed to 2013 statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and 2010 figures from the Children's Defense Fund. But that's not the time period she said she was talking about.
The only mass shooting recently in Des Moines was Nov. 8, when four people were shot at a night club. One was killed, not three.
That we have a gun problem in this country is not debatable. Making up numbers when there are easily verifiable facts hurts rather than helps the case for stricter gun control.

(19,326 posts)those were some really high numbers she was throwing out there, and I wondered at the time
if they were exaggerated or not.
Thanks for verifying that they were more "mis-rememberings" from the Clinton Camp.

I will wait for them to comment

(24,853 posts)How do you square that with the facts? Is Hillary now deemed to be clairvoyant?
She said what she said. She made it up as she went and her campaign was forced to cover for her once again.

(20,709 posts)Looks like the discrepancy is because the Gun Violence Archive only counts homicides and not suicides. Hillary was right about the total number of gun deaths.

(20,709 posts)writes and don't every check facts for themselves, but gun violence is one issue that I know a lot about and whoever wrote this article simply made a mistake.

(21,054 posts)it gives those who are rabid 2nd Amendment supporters something to point at to rally the undecided voters against Democrats. IMO, it appears that most of us and all of our candidates see a need for greater regulation of firearms. Putting out alleged facts that have no basis in reality hurts and does not help getting better regulation.

(13,598 posts)There are roughly 30k to 35k gun deaths in America each year.
I don't know where the 11,485 figure comes from or what it's for - I guess it's the number of firearm homicides, carefully excluding suicides and probably accidents as well. But for total gun deaths in a month, Clinton's figure will be right to at least one significant figure.
I don't know about mass vs non-mass shootings. Obviously, it will depend on how many people you count as "mass" - it may well be that Clinton is counting every episode where more than one person was shot as a "mass shooting", which would be contentious but not an outright lie.
So I don't know if Clinton has told any lies or not - I strongly suspect she hasn't, but I don't know what the sources of her data are. But the author of this bullshit hatchet job is doing so about at least one of the claims in question.

(52,166 posts)but it isn't Hillary. There have been about 31k gun deaths so far this year which is about 2.7k a month. She apparently rounded up. The liar you site chose to count only homicides. Thanks for bringing NRA talking points to us.

(52,166 posts)She said died, she didn't say were murdered, she said died. And she was 100 percent, gold carat correct using that term. BTW, I listen to AP news on Sirius (they do news breaks on 127 Progress) and they are fairly right wing to be honest. I have no idea if that is a new development but it is a development.
