Related: About this forumThe Clinton Campaign Wants To Win The Latino Vote One Text At A Time
It was late August, back before Marco Rubio replaced Jeb Bush as the candidate many Democrats viewed as the most formidable general election opponent, and Bush had used the term anchor babies while talking about stronger immigration enforcement.
The campaigns Latino team, which includes Hispanic outreach director Lorella Praeli, digital organizing director Jessica Morales Rocketto, Hispanic media director Jorge Silva, and Paola Luisi on the communications team, discussed how to best respond before settling on an SMS text blast to the campaigns growing list of Latinos who signed up to receive messages on their mobile phones.
They went with an aggressive attack, comparing Bush to Donald Trump, saying this is how he speaks about Latinos when he thinks no one is listening and if recipients replied with HEAR they received an automated call with audio of Bushs remarks in English and Spanish.

(58,785 posts)what he thought would be some attention-grabbing prurience into the beginning of this schlock, but it's the following (no doubt very disappointing!) heavy, uninsightful, and intensely boring piece about normal relationships that reveals where his thoughts really were. Strictly amateur hour writing 43 years ago, when people were still talking that way in public.
Now, IMO, the article that was unfortunately trash-canned with the Mother Jones piece is really worth reading.
Hillary Clinton, the presumptive favorite for the Democratic nomination, beat Obama 21 among Latino voters in the 2008 primary. It wasnt just name recognition, either. The Clintons have a robust network of Latino leaders and activists, and long history with outreach that dates back to 1970s in Texas.
. . .
In 1972, when a young Hillary and Bill Clinton were working the ill-fated George McGovern campaign, she worked closely with well-respected union leader, Franklin Garcia, who took her under his wing as she helped register Latino voters in south Texas and along the Rio Grande Valley.

Are Bernie supporters not on board with the whole "he never changes" meme. " He is always the same...that's what makes him so very cool today", meme? Why is there so much fear, angst and a cover up over posting what Bernie said?

Just goes to show that we are not dealing with political discussion here...just sycophants who seem to want to
cut real information exchange.

(58,785 posts)choose the MJ article. It includes the article as it was posted here. Bernie was 31, and a guy who alreadt took his own opinions very seriously.

if the piece is good enough for Mother Jones, then it should be fine for DU....the very tender hearts here should be able to read it without fainting!

(53,661 posts)Professors were pushing texts like 'The Story of O' and others as being worthy of study. Degradation of women sexually, against their will as part of passion, or torture, was seen as sophisticated.
This likely inspired his writing this epistle. Much worse pieces than that were published by professional authors who were touted in college then. It's easy to have an intellectual or a pseudo intellectual exercise when you're not the object of the abuse. Like the GOP or Bundy expounding on how good slavery was for AA's.

(Because you need a laugh)
There was a decided lack of empathy from the largely white male contingent in some colleges at that time, even among those who were not among the 'jocks.' The fact that such things were not going to be visited upon their own bodies and grossed out their female classmates just didn't ring a bell with them.
In Bernie's defense, he is trying to examine abuse to the mirror of political truths and ideology. His take on the elimination of abuse through a higher level of thinking through ideology, is not historically correct in many corners.
As many great exercises in revolution ignore the real faces of those trampled in the chaos or killed because they are not 'useful.' And the same utopias often have an underbelly of women and minorities whose lives are stolen, without wages and silenced by a brutality that is not acknowledged. Their voices don't survive to write famous books or as part of the lesser scale to read them in college. Much less to run for office.
Also, I think real life beyond academics shaped Bernie to be more humanistic or to be more humane, or at least I hope. But what he is now keen to rectify, he has never lived. Like the adage, 'Until the lion tells his side of the story, the tale of the hunt is not complete.'
It's time to move beyond a lack of empathy for those whose lives have been damaged by the powerful, stop taking them for granted as if they're invisible.

Seems we will be spared the snow in the lowlands. The ski resorts, which us plebes can't afford anyway, will open up, though.
Are there any special Alaskan native traditions this week?
bravenak
(34,648 posts)I plan on studying. Boring I know. I can think of no chrismas traditions for natives. Many are Russian Orthodox so they might do those Xmas things. I think Hilltop Ski area is pretty cheap. I used to go and ski badly.
It' just snowing so much. I'm staying right in bed.

(32,623 posts)WTF? It's not right wing. It isn't speculation or opinion. Those are facts, admitted by the candidate. Those articles should be discussed thoroughly, if for no other reason than to ponder the sort of attacks Republicans would make in the ge about them. I can't imagine an adequate defense.
I hear a lot of smack talk about truth around around here. But only if it's self serving, I guess.

He wrote it himself. Defend it or not but hide it from view? That's some dangerous eye covering.

(4,377 posts)But defending it was basically pointless by that point because the usual suspects had already posted a huge chain of 'OMG, I am trying so hard to sound shocked and appalled right now!' posts.
