Senate Candidate Berg (R-ND): Life Sentences For Rape Victims Who Obtain Abortions

http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/09/04/790351/gop-senate-candidate-supported-life-sentences-for-rape-victims-who-obtain-abortions/

Rep. Rick Berg (R-ND), the candidate for Senate from North Dakota, once voted for a bill that would have made any woman who obtained an abortion guilty of a homicide crime — even if it were in the case of rape or incest. Indeed, the bill Berg supported does not even contain an explicit exception if an abortion is necessary to save the woman’s life.

In 2007, Berg was among the small number of state representatives in the North Dakota House who supported the measure. It also would have imposed penalties on doctors and anyone else who “aids, abets, facilitates, solicits, or incites” a person into an abortion:

Heidi Heitkamp is well known and well liked and a formidable foe.

Mary Kathryn "Heidi" Heitkamp (born October 30, 1955) is a lawyer and politician from the U.S. state of North Dakota. She served as the 28th attorney general of the state from 1993 to 2001. She ran on the Democratic-NPL ticket for governor in 2000, losing to John Hoeven. She considered a bid for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate election to replace retiring Senator Byron Dorgan[2], but on March 3, 2010, declined the rematch against Hoeven, who was ultimately elected.[3] In November 2011, Heitkamp declared her candidacy to replace Kent Conrad as U.S. Senator from North Dakota in the 2012 election.[4]

She lost the last election because she had to drop out due to breast cancer.

Throw her and her parents in jail? Oh, wait that wouldn't happen since if they are PARENTS they must be ANTI-CHOICE.

I guess he never heard of tubal pregnancies either; BOTH will die in that case.

The only things that matter are the rapist's parental rights and the fetus's duty to vote republican.

for the penis-wielding criminal who created the need for the abortion in the first place.

I'm beginning to think it might be a very good idea to castrate all men at puberty.

And before you guys complain, what I've suggested is simply an extreme male-hating version of that these extreme women-hating men are proposing.

And no, I don't really mean it.

that women seeking abortions did not have some kind of miraculous conception. There is always a man involved.

And vasectomy at birth, while an intriguing idea, wouldn't prevent rapes, although at least it would drastically cut down on the number of pregnancies resulting from such rapes.

Oh, and it wouldn't solve the problem of pregnancy from incest, if it's the father, who married the girl's mother and got that repair with the valid marriage certificate.

It is women, and only women who bear the entire burden of pregnancy and childbirth. And yes, there are many good men out there who are as involved in the whole process as they can possibly be. But all of this total denial of a woman's own body, all of this attempt to criminalize what invariably involves a man, is beyond disgusting.

ie. throw women in prison for using birth control, basically.

"Biblical Law" and all that entails.

And it's sad that even here on DU we have people who enable the religious right and their authoritarian agenda of controlling sexuality and peoples' choices.
