While the rest of the presidential field was talking about how to confront global terrorism, Senator Bernie Sanders in recent days had a very local issue on his mind: getting a raise for professors at the City University of New York.
Roughly 25,000 CUNY faculty and professional staff members have been without a contract since 2010, and have not had salary increases in that time. Part of the reason is that the amount of per-pupil funding CUNY receives from the state has declined, adjusted for inflation, since before the recession; roughly 45 percent of the systems $3.2 billion budget comes from the state.
Mr. Sanders, a candidate for the Democratic nomination, on Friday sent a letter to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo that called on him to provide funding for a new contract with raises.
As a college degree becomes increasingly important for economic security in our vastly unequal society, CUNY has historically represented the possibility that a college education of the highest quality could be accessible to all, the Vermont senator wrote. It should continue to represent that possibility.

Way to lead by example.
But have a great day anyways!

(6,568 posts)No issues with any of them. There's a select few (which is who I was referring to), however, who always insist on shitting on a pro-Clinton thread. I was telling this poster NOT to fling it back. If it came across as a blanket statement, I apologize. I meant no harm.
I have no ill-will against Bernie or the majority of his supporters.

(1,772 posts)A Senator from another state telling a Governor what to do on a state issue. The appropriate answer is "butt out".
And this completely undercuts all the Bernie supporters' argument that he couldn't have influenced the Vermont Governor to implement single payer because he's a federal Senator. Why is he willing to fight for other State's faculty salary but he is not willing to fight for funding for his own state's single payer system (which is one of his key platform planks)?
Thanks for giving me this argument to use forever and ever!!!

(1,772 posts)that he cares so much more about how much educators are paid in other states but not single payer in his own state!!

"I represented New York, and I represented New York on 9/11 when we were attacked," Clinton said. "Where were we attacked? We were attacked in downtown Manhattan, where Wall Street is. I did spend a whole lot of time and effort helping them rebuild. That was good for New York. It was good for the economy, and it was a way to rebuke the terrorists who had attacked our country."

Other expenditures suggest AFTs decision to endorse Weingartens friend Hillary Clinton for president a move that angered many AFT members had been made long before it was announced in July.
AFT donated $250,000 to the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation in February, $125,000 to Clinton Global Initiative in April and another $125,000 to Clinton Global Initiative in May. In December, AFT paid Clinton-allied opposition research group American Bridge 21st Century $100,000.
The American Bridge payment was reported as a political expense. The payments to the Clinton family nonprofits (has had to refile several tax years for oops) were not.
