2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSome Thoughts Re- the NGP VAN Firewall "Breach"
The Sanders campaign had reported breakdowns in the NGP VAN firewalls to the DNC before, knowing that their campaign data could be accessed just as easily (see http://www.mediaite.com/online/dnc-gets-involved-after-sanders-staffer-fired-for-accessing-clinton-voter-data/ ). Did Hillary's campaign ever report such problems, or did they just not notice, or ...?
"NGP VAN? Weve all heard of that company before! Because thats the company hosting the website for the South Dakota sacrificial lamb Democrat challenger to Congresswoman Kristi Noem, Paula Hawks. And through their generosity, we all knew she was running long before she was prepared to make an announcement..." (see http://dakotawarcollege.com/hawks-website-host-who-leaked-announcement-now-blamed-for-clintonsanders-data-breach/ for more).
"The DNC hires a group to manage their database and firewall between the campaigns. They screw up and [a] Sanders staffer sees and reports it. Nothing is saved or printed out and now the DNC is withholding crucial access to voter data until the Sanders campaign can prove it doesnt have the data from the Clinton campaign and wont release access to voter data unless somehow the Sanders campaign can prove a negative that they have destroyed data they dont have. Which is impossible. (http://usuncut.com/politics/dnc-sabotages-bernie/ )

(3,133 posts)the party's vendor opened the door, just like in Florida's governor's race in 2002 when Jeb Bush got the McBride race info, and sent an email to all the dem supporters of McBride saying 'hello from Jeb!'. A complaint was filed and the campaign was told, the software vendor made an error during an update leaving the firewall down. They said it was our party's fault. Case closed. Now, after all of these years, why has DWS not found a worker YET who can safely work the NGP software??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
And blame Bernie?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

(7,231 posts)But I realise the two-word combination has become tainted. I'll use "dirty tricks" or "game-rigging" in the future.

(7,231 posts)And I have been made aware of past implications of these this particular two-word combination. I'll use "dirty tricks" or "game-rigging" in the future. DWS is disgusting enough that there is a whole string of ways to express indigation about her actions. "stunt" will be avoided in future responses.

(12,041 posts)There are all kinds of claims being floated that the Bernie Sanders campaign was involved in a conspiracy to steal data from the Hillary campaign. It is quite ironic that you accuse the OP of being a conspiracy theorist while Hillary supporters are accusing the Bernie campaign of a conspiracy.

(3,133 posts)This is the fault of the party and who THEY hired to do the software maintenance during the campaigns! If they want to punish Bernie, who's campaign did NOTHING wrong, don't look for voters, outside of her personal candidate. That translates into don't look for a win.
DWS is E V I L.

(17,340 posts)The NGP's CEO's claim that this was a "brief, isolated incident"directly contradicts the Sanders camp's contention that they'd reported the firewall breakdown before. Given that NGP had to be informed of the latest breakdown by the Sanders camp, among other reasons, I think I prefer the Sanders version.
Could Sanders seek a TRO suspending ALL the candidates' access to the VAN, until the integrity of the system has been established?
A software expert might be able to discredit the plausibility of the NGP CEO's claims that the incident was isolated and that ONLY the Sanders camp could have benefitted from the breakdown. And staffers who were aware of prior breakdowns and their reports to NGP could testify to those.

(135,425 posts)"That is the only way that we can make sure that we can protect our significant asset that is the voter file and its integrity," Wasserman Schultz said on CNN.
She said "multiple staffers" from the Sanders campaign downloaded information that they did not have the right to collect.
"They not only viewed it, but they exported it and they downloaded it," Wasserman Schultz told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. "We don't know the depth of what they actually viewed and downloaded. We have to make sure that they did not manipulate the information."
She added, "That is just like if you walked into someone's home when the door was unlocked and took things that don't belong to you in order to use them for your own benefit. That's inappropriate. Unacceptable."

(135,425 posts)One of them has been fired. They're investigating to see if anything was copied, and presumably to see if they can figure out who the other three are...?
I can't imagine Sanders, Clinton OR O'Malley digging around in an opponent's details. I suspect none of them are sufficiently tech-savvy to do such a thing, and I don't think they'd compromise their integrity even if they were tech-savvy.
I can imagine staffers with an "anything to win" mentality doing just that, though--who wouldn't want to take their ill-paid "temp job," in essence, and turn it into a well paid, government salaried, PERMANENT one (for four to eight years, at any rate--and the smart worker transitions to GS at the six year mark). The temptations are enormous--it's a grab at the brass ring. People will compromise themselves.
An investigation will sort it out--it can't take all that long, I'm sure.
