DNC slaps Sanders campaign over data breach

The data system vendor who runs the program dropped the firewall for a brief period
Sanders' team fired an employee after the data system was accessed

Washington (CNN)The Democratic National Committee is cutting Bernie Sanders off from a crucial voter database after the party organization said the Vermont senator's presidential campaign took advantage of a software error to access confidential voter information collected by Hillary Clinton's team.

The revelation is emerging ahead of the third Democratic presidential debate of the campaign season on Saturday night and poses a major setback for Sanders, who is mounting a liberal challenge to Clinton. The database is a goldmine of information about voters and being blocked from it could complicate Sanders' outreach efforts. The timing is also challenging, just weeks before Clinton and Sanders are slated to compete in the Iowa caucuses.

The Sanders campaign moved quickly to contain the damage, arguing that the vendor who runs the database made errors. The campaign also fired Josh Uretsky, its national data director.

Sanders will hold a press conference at 1pm Friday in Washington to "answer questions about the situation involving the DNC," an aide said.

When asked if Sanders will call for DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz to step down, the aide said, what is announced at the presser will be "driven by what happens between now and then in our conversations with the DNC."

The Sanders campaign is currently involved in high-level conversations with the DNC to reinstate its access to the vote file./...............

Amazing where he is going with his campaign. It's the media, DWS, democrats, etc.. Looking like desperation. We are seeing what many have editorialized in the past. He has one message and can't/shouldn't get off it.

Sanders Accounts Saved Clinton Data During Breach, Audit Says

But the audit of the database's logs created by the vendor that manages the data, NGP VAN, show that four accounts associated with the Sanders team took advantage of the Wednesday morning breach. Staffers conducted searches that would be especially advantageous to the campaign, including lists of its likeliest supporters in 10 early voting states, including Iowa and New Hampshire.

The staffers who secured access to the Clinton data included national data director Josh Uretsky, who was fired on Thursday, and his deputy, Russell Drapkin. The two other usernames that viewed Clinton information were “talani" and "csmith_bernie."
