2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWHO is responsible for keeping DNC's firewall up? DNC & NGP VAN (the vendor) OR Sanders Campaign?
NGP VAN is getting paid big bucks to secure the data, it is their responsibility, not
the Sanders campaign's. NGP VAN is under contract to keep the data & firewall secure.
From all appearances, the Sanders staffers, by their own admission, discovered this
firewall failure -- like they had several months ago, and reported it to the DNC, who
apparently did nothing to fix the problem. Sanders' staff was alarmed by it, knowing that
the Sanders data was also every bit as exposed as Hillary's, so went through the
necessary procedures to document the breach, so they could report it again but with
more substantial evidence of the breach.
Then BAM!! Waa-Laa .. the vendor (who's very cozy with the Clinton camp, having
worked in the Clinton WH) springs into action to do what? To fix the firewall? No.
They play incompetent victim, and along with DWS, dutifully spring into action to accuse
the Sanders Campaign of "stealing data".
As the msnbc commentator Bill Press said today, "I smell a rat".

(17,796 posts)to become responsible people at this point is just unfair.
They have no experience in that at all.

(17,651 posts)I saw you left your keys in the car.
I tried to warn you about it to no avail.
Your rims went missing.
You told the cops it was 100% my fault your car was stolen and you denied any negligence on your part.
Wait.....there's more....
You pulled the same stunt about 7 years ago and forgot the police had the report.
Yeah.

(17,651 posts)But hey - could be that it's as simple as making Sander's campaign look like a dishonest campaign, despite the fact that Sanders was probably very much unaware these activities were taking place and his strength is his honesty and integrity.
Or - the entire thing was cooked up by the opposition and/or NGP VAN (who BOTH btw, were caught doing something similar last GE) in order to stain Sander's campaign.
Or - staffer(s) were absolute dumbasses.
Or - the vendor, NGP VAN is so completely incompetent and negligent at securing their own sensitive data that anyone doing business with them should have 2nd thoughts. And/or the vendor, NGP VAN is so completely incompetent and negligent that anyone giving financial or personal information to any Democratic campaign should have a valid fear that their information could be used by anyone, anywhere, for nefarious purposes.
Pick one.

If you pay a guard to watch your door and the guard ignores the bad locks and sleeps on the job and there is an event you call theft but you do not hold that guard accountable nor inspect his actions the insurance investigator might have questions for you. Why were the locks not changed? Why is the door left wide open? For weeks? Why do you insist the guard is not involved and must not be questioned?

(45,319 posts)You misconstrue your position in this paradigm. I'm talking about the folks who are not firing those who fucked up. Debbie, she's protecting the inept vendor, the sleeping guard, the hotfooting valet. Claro?

(19,326 posts)2 months later, same old shit; meaning that ALL campaigns' data was exposed
and vulnerable. So the second time it was detected by Sanders staffers, they
were understandably alarmed and determined to document exactly how fucked-up
& permeable the firewalls were, so hopefully it would really get fixed; and then
Sanders gets accused of "stealing" data for their effort.
Yep.

(19,326 posts)Hillary/DNC/DWS are all noted for a lack of integrity and trustworthiness, and for equally good reasons.
You can do the math if you care to, but obviously you do not.
BTW - It is not "theft" if nothing is kept or recorded for future use, which is the case here. It was "breached"
to document the situation and alert the DNC and the vendor about the firewall problem, again for 2nd time.

(1,095 posts)Someone used an armored car example earlier, with money flying out. Said it's fine to grab it, which IT IS NOT. Though, that was a bad example. Better example would be an armored truck door was mistakenly left ajar during a delivery. You reach in and grab a bag. You'll do 10 in the Fed penitentiary if caught. Same damn thing.
I'm starting to hope for a civil suit against that thieving "National Data Manager". And if they have proof the reports were saved, then criminal charges.
Lying POS told three different stories already.

(19,326 posts)Sanders' campaign has been totally transparent and forthcoming about what
happened, what they did and why ... and that none of Hillary's data was used by
the Sanders campaign in any way, except to document how negligent the vendor
and the DNC have been in securing and maintaining the DNC database firewalls.
Remember, Sanders' data was ALSO equally exposed and vulnerable, and they
had every right to be concerned and to do what they felt necessary to get the
attention of the DNC & Vendor to get the firewall issue fixed, like it hadn't before
when they alerted about the same issue in October.

(36,649 posts)regardless of what protections the vendor had. And yes, Sanders data was also every bit as exposed as Hillary's. But the Clinton campaign DIDN'T STEAL ANY DATA!!
There certainly is a rat in this whole sorry business, and it's employed by Bernie Sanders.

(19,326 posts)Since the cozy DNC/HRC/DWS/NGP VAN cast of characters is not about to voluntarily offer-up
that information, even if it's available. For all we (and the Sanders campaign) know, Bernie's
data could have been totally stolen during the time that the firewall has been down.
We simply do not know.
What we do know is that the NGP VAN vendor has been chronically negligent in maintaining
the security of the firewall -- which left ALL THREE campaigns exposed to data theft --
for over a period of at least 2 months.
What we do know i that the vendor is an old friend of the Clintons, having worked in Bill
Clinton's WH and several other campaigns.
What we do know is that DWS has rigged the debates and is 110% in the tank for Hillary.

(36,649 posts)Funny how there's ALWAYS a presumption of guilt for Clinton & her people, in spite of the lack of any evidence - and in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
OTOH there's ALWAYS a presumption of innocence for Sanders & his people, in spite of overwhelming evidence of their guilt - and in spite of lack evidence to the contrary. They're much like Republicans in that respect.

(16,184 posts)Ever.
Anyone with any degree of experience in IT, security, or otherwise handling confidential, restricted, and compartmentalized information knows that unless someone's given direct authorization to access certain data, they're not authorized to handle it.
Firewalls failing are not someone being given direct authorization. It's the exact same as someone driving off with another person's car without permission and saying it's alright because the keys were left in the ignition.
Sanders staffers should never have been accessing that information, even if just to prove a point to the vendor. This fuckup is entirely of their own making. The vendor needs to fix their system, yes, but they didn't tell that Sanders staffer to access information that wasn't his to access.
