One way or another the Sanders campaign screwed up.

There are two ways of looking at what happened with the breached voter files...

1. We believe the fired Sanders staffer that he found a problem and was documenting it so he could report it.

Assuming that the fired staffer is telling the truth... He found a problem and was preparing to report it. If this is true:

a. he did the right thing
b. the Sanders staffer should have been permitted to state the facts to the DNC
c. the staffer shouldn't have been terminated
d. terminating him immediately set him free to talk to the media and boy did he talk.
e. His story made the Sanders campaign look like they shoot first, ask questions later.
f. they fired a whistleblower

2. We believe the Sanders campaign that the staffer did something wrong by breaching and copying the data

a. a staffer stole data
b. a staffer was involved in an unethical (at best) and criminal (at worst) act

So either way they screwed up. I think scenario 1 is more likely, but the evidence better supports scenario 2.

Then after all of this, they sent a madman onto the TV to rant and rave about how they were the victim of their own crime. This jacked up the negative press. It might have raised funds, but it turned a small story into a full blown scandal.

After that, they sued the DNC while admitting wrongdoing again. This turned what should have been a minor story into a "firestorm" according to ABC.

And where did we end up? Sanders got access to the data back within 24 hours. That's something they would have had either way. So they gained nothing and got labeled as an "unethical", "dirty" campaign to a lot of people that were barely paying attention. It's a lesson in how NOT to handle a problem.

It was because legal discovery could have been used on the DNC and the software vendor to find out if anything else was amiss.

Without the lawsuit it is just an agreement to agree on an independent audit of the security of the software.

“The Sanders campaign has now complied with the DNC’s request to provide the information that we have requested of them. Based on this information, we are restoring the Sanders campaign’s access to the voter file, but will continue to investigate to ensure that the data that was inappropriately accessed has been deleted and is no longer in possession of the Sanders campaign. The Sanders campaign has agreed to fully cooperate with the continuing DNC investigation of this breach. The fact that data was accessed inappropriately is completely unacceptable, and the DNC expects each campaign to operate with integrity going forward with respect to the voter file.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/1251917210

Sanders campaign was always going to get access to the data back. There wasn't a question about that. But instead of handling a minor story as minor, they escalated it to their detriment.

"Why would they do something like that if Bernie's campaign was in the wrong?"

Not sure what you're asking here. The Sanders campaign admitted to the breach and fired a staffer. There's not a question on if something happened.

Twenty years ago, this would be all over the news and that would be it for Bernie.

Today, millions of Americans on social media pile on to correct lies and bullshit. We control the dialog. Who was that futurist who said, "The message IS the media."

Used to be network TV.

Then it was cable.

Then it was My Space.

Then Facebook.

Now...it is us with our social media.

Bernie needs to win this, because if a Republican, or if Clinton gets in look for net neutrality to be overturned ASAP. Because this revolution is not televised. It is tweeted.

And when Bernie DID fight back, and filed suit, they realized they were effed and then THE DNC caved to prevent any lawsuit/discovery from going forward..

Because it would come out that it was Hillarys former 2008 tech guys company that the DNC hired to run their database, and they were totally incompetent. Well that was probably the least of their worries, more likely it was cuz the agreement signed with each campaign gives ten days to rectify and address complaint and DWS did not honor that, instead she cut access to Bernie immediately.

Would run a campaign within the same party, when his people steal data, he blusters and puffs chest instead of owning and resolving. Why wasn't his voice out there telling supporters to back off Clinton. She was the victim of the theft. He said nothing allowing his people to shift his blame to her.

The hard data of the computer logs tell the real truth.

"the logs show the Sanders staffers took deliberate steps to harvest and store the information."

http://time.com/4155185/bernie-sanders-hillary-clinton-data/

...............According to data reviewed by TIME, the Sanders campaign appears to have obtained files with lists of voters that the Clinton campaign had cultivated in 10 early states including Iowa and New Hampshire.

Beyond simply reviewing the data, the logs show the Sanders staffers took deliberate steps to harvest and store the information. According to the logs, the Sanders staff created from scratch no fewer than 24 lists—consisting entirely of data pulled down from the Clinton campaign’s database—and saved them to their personal folders.

The logs show the Sanders campaign accessed the Clinton data for nearly one hour beginning around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday. The Sanders staffers were apparently able to view unique voter information along with accompanying information about how likely the voters were to vote for the various candidates, crucial information that the Clinton campaign has likely spent millions of dollars to collect.

The Clinton campaign called for a clear accounting of the breach.

“We were informed that our proprietary data was breached by Sanders campaign staff in 25 searches by four different accounts and that this data was saved into the Sanders’ campaign account,” said spokesman Brian Fallon. “We are asking that the Sanders campaign and the DNC work expeditiously to ensure that our data is not in the Sanders campaign’s account and that the Sanders campaign only have access to their own data.”

Moreover, the Sanders staffers who carried out the breach included a top lieutenant for the Vermont senator: Josh Uretsky, the national data director for the campaign.

The Sanders campaign denied that it had downloaded any data, saying that it did not retain information from the Clinton campaign.

“They didn’t download it—they went in looked around,” said Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs, who announced Thursday the campaign was firing Utersky and that they were treating the matter seriously.

Uretsky also told MSNBC that the campaign “did not export any records or voter file data” and was simply trying “to document and understand the scope of the problem.”.................

They overracted, and shot themselves in the foot. 24 hours after the data breach, they cut access. The DNC's contract clearly states that a campaign 10 days to resolve cases like this before action is taken. DWS is a complete fool to think Bernie wouldn't lawyer up.

Sanders Campaign’s Breach of Clinton Data More Serious Than Disclosed

Bernie has come out smelling like a rose and due to this will be a much better known rose. Unevenness in the handling of this matter increase smarmy ratings of Hillary, DWS, and the DNC, further aligning the organization as supporter of the third way. This will increase the attention given to Bernie as the lawsuit did, It will also portray to many people how Hillary and DWS talk big but back down quickly in the face of actions like the lawsuits such as this one filed by Bernie. And after all, if you back down so quickly from such a frivolous (sarcasm) lawsuit, how can we trust you to stand up to Putin or fight ISIS?
It also is going to be used to slow donations to the DNC and create new donors for Bernie. It will to a limited degree slice off a few voters from Hillary especially those already getting concerned about the debate numbers, the scheduling of the debates, and refusals to let other debates not sanctioned by the DNC occur. Women who support Hillary now will begin to move to Bernie as he becomes more accepted as the victim of the establishment rather than seeing Hillary as that poor mistreated female, and actually see that the only thing she shares more with women than Bernie is their gender. They will recognize that Bernie is better for everyone and better for the family in total. Hillary and DWS already lost this one and the more it is replayed, the more he wins.
