2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHow long will the Koch Bros continue to support a losing cause?
Will they go another month? Sooner or later they might want to cut their loses. I can't imagine those greedy bastards throwing money at a loser.
How long?

(36,437 posts)Watch for Romney's September fundraising to be on a downward trend. You can smell loser on him already. The demoralization is starting to kick in with the rank and file, and the real donors are going to start hedging by cozying up to the Dems, if they haven't already. You might see a movement of some of that money into the Senate and House races as the Big Money interests desperately seek a hedge through divided government.

(6,890 posts)It is but a fraction of their wealth. If we want to diminish their political power, we should fund alternate energy sources. For example, I can imagine a day when our electricity is produced by a local coop from wind and solar, and we could use that energy to power our automobiles and homes. This would decentralize energy production and distribute wealth evenly.

(40,416 posts)I am keenly interested in the next weeks until the election. No matter how it goes, we are all going to learn a lot.
Stay tuned. Stay tuned in. Put aside the conspiracies. See things as they develope. History has no previous analogues. We are cutting new territory here.

(19,458 posts)I know that rOmney doesn't seem to have any friends, but other than the talking head surrogates on fox, sure seems that he's kinda of persona non gratta lately. Maybe the repubs are afraid that the losing stink will rub off on them.

(2,514 posts)that's the reason the very few moderate Republicans are so hard to beat... a few of them have already moved to the center.. Elizabeth Warren's battle in Ma. for instance..
i think most Republicans deep down inside, know that this race could be a blow out this year.. rivaling the Goldwater fiasco of 1964, watch what happens after the first debate... after all the stuff we hear that is only for internal consumption like "we don't have enough angry white guys", shows not only honesty, it shows desperation..
in a true wave election the voter suppression efforts will fail, and will in fact add to the GOP woes going forward as few will trust them..

(1,418 posts)umm, I guess everyone conveniently forgot we got totally crushed in the 2010
midterm election??
has our economy improved significantly since then?

(3,544 posts)people think it's only important to vote every 4 years. Mid term elections do not get the exposure, and they should. Mid term is just as important, if not more, than the presidential election, and people don't understand that. No one showed up in 2010. I don't get it.

(2,682 posts)If they are not pursuing a passionate vision, they will cut their losses. However, if they have something in mind they think worth the vast sums of money, they will continue to spend. At that point, all it takes is finding the person who knows the computerized voting system and paying that person sufficiently to have things go the Koch-way, and they will cinch the election, regardless of what the voters chose.
The question will be, what has motivated them. The speculation about Adleson is that he figures with a Romney Department of Justice, he will avoid the huge, fortune-depleting fines he might otherwise have to pay for various violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Perhaps the Koch's have some similar skeleton in their closet they figure Romney will cover for them.
Anyway, it's interesting to speculate........

(1,418 posts)as long as their Billions of dollars last??
the notion these guys have limits is nonsense.

(3,544 posts)They were idiots to support Rmoney to begin with. The only reason they are doing it is because of their extreme hatred towards Obama. I say let em sink more and more into this losing cause. If they pullout now, it will look bad for Rmoney. So go all in!!! By now, 99% of the people are set on who they are going to vote for anyway.

(22,651 posts)benefit today. With money they have managed to obstruct progress for 'The People' and America seems like 100% of the time.
If it's a bill to their benefit it will get done in a day, if it's not it will drag out for months or get changed at the last second. They are pros at attaching riders. Pros at making the Presidents admin work on something for months then they quit, walk away.
Be interesting to see a list of what kind of local property tax these top 500 billionaires pay on their property and how much Federal taxpayer money they manage to grab for their own personal "farms/ranches" and mansions.
I don't think it matters much to them who is President. At the local levels are where 'the people' are the most restricted of all. And they own that part of their world.
Wish we had Federal reconstruction for the States, where every local Gov is audited and redone to the peoples advantage.

(29,723 posts)so even if they cut their loses on mittens, they surely won't cut and run on the House and Senate races.

(17,064 posts)The wild card might be Adelson, though. He is trying to buy his way out of an investigation. Donating to Senate and Congressional candidates doesn't help him much, and with Romney looking more and more like a loser he may just pull his money and set it aside for his lawyers.

(5,060 posts)Spending hundreds of millions of dollars to win an election is decidedly different from spending hundreds of millions of dollars losing an election.
The Electoral College reality makes it entirely possible that the wealthy right wing supporters will empty their vaults and lose the election.
Nothing would make me happier.

(54,448 posts)Don't think that they'll throw in the towel just because Rolls-Ryan is a loser. If they can buy the Senate and the House, they've accomplished a holding pattern. We won't be able to afford any Ben Nelsons this time around.
The Kochs are in their seventies and are worth $10 billion plus EACH. They'll never spend what they have on themselves in this lifetime. The only thing left to do with money like that is buy POWER. And that is the ONLY item on their shopping list.
