The Danger of Running a "Values" Candidate: Why Hillary is the Workhorse for Me

Warning: massive metaphor alert!

If you run a "values" candidate, you also run the risk that dirt can stick---and tarnish. Yes, Democratic voters love a candidate whom they can declare "pure", "idealistic", "clean." But look what happened when McGovern stumbled once. There goes the lovely illusion of incorruptibility. And once a "values" candidate is revealed to have feet of clay just like every other candidate, he or she is no better than the opponent.

Give me a hard working, trooper, one who can get the job done. You can not tarnish a workhorse with dirt, because his or her feet are already firmly planted in the mud through which the rest of us slog.

No thanks.
