2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumLike it or not, HRC will need Bernie supporters next November. Or vice versa
I really do not understand this arrogant attitude from the Clinton supporters. Very shortsighted, if you actually care about winning the GE. Why are you acting this way toward votes you ABSOLUTELY need next fall? It appears some of you would rather win the battle of pride today, even if it means losing the war next November. Which is very interesting.
At the end of the day, you still gotta get on your knees to court Bernie and his supporters. I'm sure a lot of you long time, 'loyal' party people (who have worked years, even decades to move up in the party rankings like a loyal, thoughtless peon) want to throw up at the thought of that...but guess what? If you don't do it, your horse has no chance. And the system you are familiar with could be destroyed.
Yep, I just insulted you guys. Buy guess what? You can either tell people like me to fuck off and you'll lose the general, or swallow your pride, court our vote and beat Trump. Yeah, it's a shitty situation for you. But that's how it's going to be, esp after Friday. Sorry.

(4,458 posts)supporters. The GOP would rather face off with HRC than Sanders.....Any person can physically align with group A/B/C...but that is just part of their job duties as assigned.
I would hate to believe that all this crap is levied by "real" Dems from the our base.

(2,760 posts)This DU uproar isn't even close to representative of Dem primary voters, let alone the general electorate. This while dust up is a blip on the radar, nothing more.
The GOP is on the verge of nominating a maniac, I guarantee you the GE will be about far, far bigger issues than this.

(5,621 posts)Many, many Bernie supporters are first time voters and voters who never really got involved in politics. Will they vote Hillary, some will, but most won't bother to show up to vote.
Many, many Bernie and Trump voters are anti-establishment, and won't vote for an establishment candidate. Some will even cross party lines to vote for the other, should their candidate not win the primary. And, if neither wins the primary, expect a low voter turnout, which doesn't help the dem candidate.
And while Hillary supporters can disregard this simple fact with bravado, it won't make Hillary's climb to the White House easy or even possible.

(36,063 posts)You can say that was all done by DUers and not reflective of broader action by active Dem leaning voters, but my guess is that's a misread biased by trying to simplify and minimize the outcry

(36,063 posts)People tend to go along with the opinion they hold, unless they commit to even greater enthusiasm for the thing they already hold.
Nothing pushes enthusiasm like a threat to something you cherish.
Tomorrow the dem base will be more firmly divided than it was a week ago. It's likely to stay that way until it gets even worse.

(42,862 posts)Why flatter the vanities (or faux delicate temperaments) of a few anonymous posters? I find it difficult to believe that anyone would choose to vote (or not vote) because they were offended by an anonymous user on a web site. No matter how they choose to justify their decision, they'll vote as they please no matter what. They're playing a game.

(20,709 posts)And calling people "loyal thoughtless peons", is that some kind of voter outreach?
Guess what. I'm not running for any office, so I don't need to court any votes. Instead, I can tell it like it is:
Hillary's going to win the nomination. Bernie has no chance. Then, Bernie will endorse Hillary, and most Bernie fans will vote for her in the general. The few that end up sitting out are idiots who don't care what happens to the country, and the good news there is that they won't be posting on DU anymore.
Do you feel "courted"?
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)I've been telling Bernie supporters for MONTHS that they need to convert lots and lots of people who like Hillary (who would happily vote for her) and not demonize them, because there was no other way for Bernie to win the primary.
They, by and large, told me to go to hell.
Now here's a Bernie supporter demanding to be courted or he'll let the GOP win I guess. And happily insulting us in the process.
Some one is in a shitty situation. But you are wrong about who it is.
rhett o rick
(55,981 posts)How can you convert someone that seems to worship the power and wealth of the 1%?
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)... by demonizing people who liked Hillary and supported her early on, you lost all credibility with them going forward.
The endless foaming at the mouth makes many Bernie supporters unreliable sources or surrogates. All of the nonsensical exaggerations, the efforts to turn every utterance into a scandal to end all scandals, makes it impossible to take many Sanders supporters seriously.
Even if one is willing to engage them, you are immediately struck by how over the top and ridiculous they become.
As you just demonstrated.
rhett o rick
(55,981 posts)pay attention to those whose new enthusiasm (foaming at the mouth as you try so hard to be pejorative) revolves around the idea that we can get rid of the corruption that now allows big money to buy our politicians. Your, I am sure self justified, attempts to disparage the new Democratic voters will back-fire. But I am sure you don't care. The 1% doesn't care if Clinton or Bush wins.
The most important thing to you is to see that no progressive wins.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)... is to pack every office with Democrats.
The time wasted vilifying Hillary does nothing to actually change things.
Its ranting, and its ineffective.

(45,851 posts)Good grief, Tammany Hall was a Democratic organization.
The only thing that really effectively fights political corruption is a vigorous partisan political process where the different sides have an interest in exposing the corruption of the other side and even that isn't foolproof by a long long shot.

(337 posts)Apologies if the OP was blunt but it obviously served it's purpose. The political reality is your comparison is apples to oranges. The frontrunner, and her supporters, have to be diplomatic and above everyone else. The challengers do not. That's the political lay of the land at this point. You guys are supposed to be the best at playing the Game of politics...now show me.
If I were in your shoes, I'd be perfectly ok with that tradeoff....swallow personal pride to win the general. It is an opportunity for you guys to shine and look more mature, while remaining in 1st and growing your base. Your chance to show that you're above the mess. But, yes, it requires getting on your knees and courting Bernie supporters, even when we are ugly and nasty.
Instead, pride gets in the way and you guys go right into the mud. Too easy, too predictable and very concerning.
