As a matter of fact, Trump clearly says that Sanders is foolish for trying to downgrade the email controversy at the first debate. Pretty obvious the Donald would never have done that.
He's saying she threw Bernie under the bus. That cannot be considered a "defense" except in Camp Weathervane.
