2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumShouldn't Bernie have also apologized to Hillary supporters?
I read a tweet by a Hillary volunteer who said her and her 2 kids ages 10 and 8 worked through the summer helping compile those lists. Not only was potentially millions worth of data stolen, but months of hard labor was also potentially stolen.
I know Bernie fans don't want this to be a big deal, and it probably won't be a big deal, but with new reports of staffers saving files then trying to cover it up there is literally no way of ever knowing what or how much was taken. Or for how long it was being snooped.

(10,751 posts)DWS went to the press and accused the Sanders campaign of stealing data, all the while lacking proof that anything was taken?
Wow. She's even more low-down than I thought.

(10,751 posts)...Here is what YOU said was the reason DWS did not go to the police:
You seem to be unaware that one of the functions of law enforcement is to INVESTIGATE.
However, instead of going for a proper investigation, DWS decided to go for trial-by-press.
That didn't work out all that well for her though.
Especially when a campaign that, according to her, had "nothing but bluster" to offer, somehow managed to get her to back down toot sweet when it was time to appear before a judge.
It speaks for itself.

(19,877 posts)Nothing has to be physically taken for this to even be breaking the rules. The rules WERE BROKEN, we just never know how much FURTHER the rule breaking went.
ljm2002
(10,751 posts)...DWS and the DNC were in breach of contract when they withdrew access to the data from the Sanders campaign, choosing not to follow the steps prescribed therein. They BROKE THE RULES, we just don't know how many MORE rules they may have broken.
In addition, there is some evidence that the DNC and their software provider were negligent in how they handled the data of all the campaigns.
This is why a full audit, from day one of the primary campaign, is called for.
joshcryer
(62,276 posts)...I got a bridge to sell you.
If DWS even thought to openly go to the police or feds then not doing so was the smartest thing she's done. Going on CNN and yelling from the rooftops, "Hey, I want the feds to investigate the opposing campaign!" would be insane.
You don't fuck with a political campaign. All the ugly shit gets pushed under the rug and you move on. We saw this with how quickly Obama and Clinton made up after arguably the nastiest Democratic primary in history.
Give it time and arrests are going to be made.

(3,111 posts)As Bernie has said, offered, and as the lawsuit stipulates.
Then we can talk about the facts, as they occur in that clear light of day, and not through various wordings through various parties on the way there.

(27,310 posts)I bet you've emailed your candidate to allow such audit to be conducted to see how deeply and egregiously the Sanders campaign has exploited the security breach since the beginning. It may even reveal that Bernie's staffers actually stole something.
JaneyVee
(19,877 posts)highprincipleswork
(3,111 posts)The contract between DNC and Sanders campaign does not allow them to simply discontinue service, without notification and ten days to rectify and problems.
I believe that most people on the Sanders side are very content to let the facts come out as they may. We know that Bernie was in no way involved in this, but that some people on his staff (now fired) took some unwise actions. How "illegal" they were or how far they went is still undetermined, and an independent investigation would surely uncover that.
At the same time, considering the close relationship between NGP VAN and the Clintons, and since they are the only ones that truly have control of the information, we need an independent investigation of not only this incident, but of the previous breach, of what the nature of that was and also why it was not fixed, of what caused these breaches, of why they are still in charge of this process after failing twice to protect the information, of their relationship with the DNC and the Clinton campaign, and about frankly all uses of the system by all sides, not just the Sanders operation. After all, it is freely acknowledged that the lack of firewall was just as dangerous for all parties, including the Sanders campaign, and there are many accounts that the Sanders people were just checking their own vulnerabilities during this process.
I am not saying this is the correct story, but let's have a mutually approved authority run an investigation of al of this, and get the facts out.

But if others reacted the same way, Clinton would do best to not mention any of this ever again.

(44,182 posts)He apologized to his supporters because he promised them an ethical campaign that wasn't politics as usual. His rogue staff members violated that promise he made to >his supporters<. I"m paraphrasing what he said last night.
Apology to HRC was enough, IMHO. And she was very gracious. I think they were both very statesman-like. I enjoyed seeing them patting each other on the back several times, there seemed to be some genuine appreciation for one another.

JaneyVee
(19,877 posts)Nah just kidding.
Luminous Animal
(27,310 posts)I was already on a planning committee to do such. The chances of arrest were high and her dad and I were afraid for her safety if we became separated. Fortunately, for our own peace of mind, chief of police announced that all juvenile peaceful protesters would be taken to Valencia Street station AND NOT PUT INTO A HOLDING CELL (this was key
we did not want her behind bars) and released to a pre-approved adult, we went to the station and submitted names and numbers of friends that could secure her release. We copied her passport, birth certificate and CA ID, put them in her pocket with the list of our friends phone numbers and let her go.
What she didn't know is that I was already decided to let her go without all the protections. My own family let me go with my aunt to a huge May Day protest in DC in 1971 when I was 14. My husband wasn't convinced that my own experience was enough to allow herself to put herself at risk.
This was so important to her. We watched shock and awe together. She fell to her knees with her head in my lap. Sobbing. She knew that innocents were being slaughtered.
Letting her protest
trusting that she would practice civil disobedience was a real defining moment for our family. She wasn't a just a kid anymore. She was taking steps to be an adult.
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)My youngest can do things like that. But, not for making lists even at the age of 21 she wouldn't be keen on that. But, yeah she will listen to music and clean out a freezer at work.
