Sanders fails to convert data breach into new support

http://www.politico.com/story/2015/12/bernie-sanders-progressives-data-breach-support-217114

KEOTA, Iowa — Bernie Sanders was eager to turn his fight with the Democratic National Committee into an anti-establishment battle cry that might unite his base and deprive Hillary Clinton a piece of the party she’ll need to secure the nomination.

Trouble is, Iowa Democrats aren’t buying it.

That’s not how the Sanders team saw this playing out. After the data breach and the DNC’s decision to temporarily halt the insurgent’s access to his own voter files, the campaign prepped an anti-establishment message and launched a television- and fundraising-push that attempted to cast Sanders as a progressive hero. They moved his Iowa events to bigger venues, anticipating bigger crowds.

This 'data breach' story didn't resonate in a good way for him with the uninterested voter.

His staff came across like cheaters. The uninterested voter doesn't really care about "party fights." They do care about stealing and cheating, though.

He came across as honorable, in that he apologized. But he's a man who is hampered by, among other things, his staff.

The DNC and Little Debbie DID shaft him over access to his campaign's information.

I don't know if Sanders seeking legal relief is what I'd call converting new support.

Sounds really silly .

It has only been a few business days, and now Christmas is upon us.

If it just depresses Clinton turnout in Iowa it is a win.

They do realize that those polls are taken several days before they're released, right? Of course they do, but that won't stop them from creating a new narrative.

Democrats are notoriously famous for shooting one's self in the foot.

The decision to take this thing public by DWS or whoever did that was a very big mistake.

Thank goodness it happened now and not later.

The truth. We know for a long time there has been attacks on the DNC, these attacks will not give the nomination to Sanders, those turning out to vote and caucus will determine the nomination. This is the way it was designed and the way it will work again this primary.

That campaign manager who owns the comic book store was just coming off as TOO enraged. Then, quick like a bunny, someone gets FIRED. Then, there's more poutraging, but his staff doesn't do too well in media availabilities. Then, two MORE people get "let go." Then, it comes out that Sanders didn't get the bad news from HIS people, that "the Evil DWS" had to call him and TELL him what was going on.

At that point, I was all about the "Mmmmm hmmmm." Initially, when Sanders wasn't responding, I was irritated with him. When I learned that he had to learn about the breach from the Chair of the DNC, and then I saw him apologize, my ire abated.

I think he is poorly served by his staff, and if things play out as many think they will, he is going to have to fire a few more of them before all is said and done.

http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/more-fallout-democratic-data-breach-still-come

For Clinton, the data the Sanders aides accessed includes what Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook called “the fundamental keys of our campaign.” He said it took millions of dollars and thousands of person-hours to assemble, and could reveal secret aspects of their strategy. Even if the Sanders campaign was never able to save any of the data, the staffers who saw that data can’t unsee it, forcing the Clinton campaign to operate under the assumption that at least some of the information was compromised.
The impact is likely even bigger for Sanders, who was forced to cripple one of his most important departments by firing his top data staffer and suspending two others. More suspensions or terminations are likely, according to aides.

These are critical functions performed by people with highly specialized skills and institutional memory who will be difficult to replace – especially with less than six weeks until the Iowa caucuses.

“I think it is fairly devastating,” said Michael Simon, a Democratic data consultant who ran the 2008 Obama campaign’s analytics operation. “I can’t imagine a worse thing happening from a personnel point of view … He didn’t necessarily have the strongest operation anyway, and now it’s sort of been hacked off by the knees.”

Many operatives in the highly coveted data field are already locked into jobs for the rest of the election cycle, and some may be reluctant to work for a rival to Clinton, who is expected to wind up as the party’s nominee. ....
