2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumwhy did BHO seek the votes of racists, etc?
And I'm having a hard time telling the substantive diff between his effort and Bernies, since neither suggested/hinted that they'd be attending any KKK rallies.
Bernie ---- "Many of Trump's supporters are working-class people and they're angry, and they're angry because they're working longer hours for lower wages, they're angry because their jobs have left this country and gone to China or other low-wage countries, they're angry because they can't afford to send their kids to college so they can't retire with dignity," Sanders said on Face the Nation. http://www.commondreams.org/news/2015/12/28/sanders-makes-play-trumps-angry-supporters
BHO ---- On February 12, 2008, Barack Obama mentioned Obama Republicans in his Potomac primary victory speech: "We are bringing together Democrats and independents, and yes, some Republicans. I know there'sI meet them when I'm shaking hands afterwards. There's one right there. An Obamacan, that's what we call them." In another speech, he said, "We, as Democrats right now, should tap into the discontent of Republicans. I want some Obama Republicans!" In his call for Republican votes, Obama referred to Ronald Reagan, who he says "was able to tap into the discontent of the American people...to get Democrats to vote Republican they were called Reagan Democrats."

(2,717 posts)Clinton fans made a big stink about Obama doing this.

(2,570 posts)I've used this place as the news aggregator that it is almost since they hung their internet shingle, but didn't start participating or even reading the comments until before the 2012 election.
There really is NO difference between their efforts, because both merely sought votes from repubs that were incidental to their policy proposals, not as a result of any pandering they intended to do.
And it's almost like they're contending that there are no racists voting dem these days as well. Given that's a laughable falsehood, aren't they ALL guilty? Bernie woulda and coulda made the same case, just as BHO woulda, regardless of who the repub front runner or eventual candidate was/is.

(57,349 posts)Obama knew he had to reach across the aisle and so does Bernie.
Hillary did the same thing when she pandered to gun owners and homophobes in 2008.
It's what you do when you want votes.

(55,894 posts)it's different because... Bernie.
THAT is the truth of the matter.
It's hypocritical on a massive scale.
At least you tacitly admit Bernie is reaching out to gun-lovers and homophobes.

(57,349 posts)And get back to me when Bernie actually brags about shooting things to impress gun nuts or panders to and campaigns with homophobes who think AIDS is a punishment from God.
Because when he went to Liberty U he stood up for our rights.

(2,570 posts)and , like with his speech at Liberty U, he's not giving anything up for those votes. It's really more of a hopeful prediction than anything else imo, for that reason -- he's only got what he's selling to all of us to rely upon.
