There's an OP pushing Sanders' utterly inane "analysis" of the Obama admin that I'm discretely ignoring but this pretty much says it all. Happy New Year!

p.s. I'd say he's in the top 10 US presidents for sure. Basically he saved the nation if not the world from ruin and also managed to get reelected and it appears to pass the baton to a worthy successor.

We elected the most progressive president in generations in 2008 and there has been a lot of progress since January 20, 2009. I know a lot of people continue to be negative, but I decided to go a different route.

Here is a list of many of President Obama’s accomplishments as President. Every one of them has a citation, so no one can dismiss them as lies. Even with the obstacles we gave him, this President will leave a hell of a legacy. If we want to win elections – and in a democracy, that has to be our main goal – we have to make people want to vote for us. That means accentuating the positive, and talking about how great we are, especially compared to the alternative.

Here’s What He’s Done:

Returned The Executive Branch To Fiscal Responsibility

Within his first week, he signed an Executive Order ordering an audit of government contracts, and combating waste and abuse. http://1.usa.gov/dUvbu5

Created the post of Chief Performance Officer, whose job it is to make operations more efficient to save the federal government money. http://n.pr/hcgBn1

On his first full day, he froze White House salaries. http://on.msnbc.com/ewJUIx

He appointed the first Federal Chief Information Officer to oversee federal IT spending.http://www.cio.gov

He committed to phasing out unnecessary and outdated weapons systems. To that end, he also signed the Democratic-sponsored Weapons Systems Acquisition Reform Act, which attempted to put a stop to waste, fraud and abuse in the defense procurement and contracting system. http://bit.ly/hOw1t1http://bit.ly/fz8GAd

Through an executive order, he created the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. http://bit.ly/hwKhKa

Prevented a Bush Depression and Improved the Economy

Pushed through and signed the Democratic-sponsored American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, otherwise known as “the stimulus package.” The bill passed, even though only three Republicans voted for it. In a major departure from the previous administration, he launched recovery.gov, a website that allows taxpayers to track spending from the Act. http://1.usa.gov/ibiFSshttp://1.usa.gov/e3BJMk

The Bush-led Great Recession was costing the economy nearly 800,000 jobs per month by the time President Obama took office. But by the end of his first year, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act created and sustained 2.1 million jobs and stimulated the economy by 3.5%. http://reut.rs/i46CEE

Not only did he completed the massive TARP financial and banking rescue plan, he also leaned on the banks and others, and recovered virtually all of the bail-out money. http://1.usa.gov/eA5jVShttp://bit.ly/eCNrD6

He created the Making Home Affordable home refinancing plan. http://1.usa.gov/goy6zl

Oversaw the creation of more jobs in 2010 alone than Bush did in eight years. http://bit.ly/hrrnjY

Along with Democrats, and almost no Republicans, implemented an auto industry rescue plan, and saved as many as 1 million jobs. http://bit.ly/ibhpxr Many are of the opinion that he saved the entire auto industry, and even the economy of the entire Midwest. http://bit.ly/gj7mt5This resulted in GM returning to its place as the top car company in the world. http://lat.ms/zIJuQx

Doubled funding for the Manufacturing Extension Partnership, which is designed to improve manufacturing efficiency. http://bit.ly/eYD4nf

Signed the Democratic-sponsored Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act giving the federal government more tools to investigate and prosecute fraud in every corner of the financial system, and create a bipartisan Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission to investigate the financial fraud that led to the economic meltdown. http://abcn.ws/g18Fe7

Signed the Democratic-sponsored Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure (CARD) Act, which was designed to to protect consumers from unfair and deceptive credit card practices. http://1.usa.gov/gIaNcS

Increased infrastructure spending after years of neglect. http://bit.ly/f77aOw

Signed the Democratic-sponsored and passed Helping Families Save Their Homes Act, expanding on the Making Home Affordable Program to help millions of Americans avoid preventable foreclosures. The bill also provided $2.2 billion to help combat homelessness, and to stabilize the housing market. http://bit.ly/eEpLFn

Through the Worker, Homeownership, and Business Assistance Act of 2009, he and Congressional Democrats provided tax credits to first-time home buyers, which helped the U.S. housing market recovery. http://bit.ly/dZgXXwhttp://bit.ly/gORYfL

Initiated a $15 billion plan designed to encourage increased lending to small businesses. http://1.usa.gov/eu0u0b

Created business.gov, which allows for online collaboration between small businesses and experts re managing a business. (The program has since merged with SBA.gov.) http://www.business.gov

Played a lead role in getting the G-20 Summit to commit to a $1.1 trillion deal to combat the global financial crisis. http://nyti.ms/gHlgp5

Along with Congressional Democrats, provided funding to states and the Department of Homeland Security to save thousands of police and firefighter jobs from being cut during the recession. http://bit.ly/g0IKWR

Led the country to 64 consecutive months of economic expansion, eclipsing Saint Reagan’s record, by far. http://onforb.es/1sxJ2by

Oversaw a reduction in the dollar amount of the federal budget deficit by two-thirds since taking office. http://bit.ly/1xKMmjY

Reduced the federal budget deficit from 9.8% of GDP in Fiscal Year 2009 under Bush, to 2.9% of GDP in FY 2014. http://www.cbo.gov/publication/45653

appreciate it. I'm particularly glad he got the Heritage plan for healthcare passed as I have benifitted from it. However, I would not call him progressive. He put social security on the table. He has promoted privatization of our public institutions such as public education. He said he would put on his walking shoes for unions but didn't. He has supported expansion of oil drilling off our coast. He has expanded authority of the executive branch concerning acts of war. These are but a few problems I have had with this administration. That said, he has been better than the other side's alternatives.

People create these delusions all the time and it is I think more common on the right...I remember people saying the George Bush would go down as the greatest president, and they probably still think it today.

But I do find it embarrassing when liberals do it...when it is obvious that there has been nothing transnational in the last 7 years. It is better described as more of the same.

Transformation would be something like closing Gitmo, reducing the military presence around the world and holding Wall Street accountable for the financial crisis that required the bailout in the first place.

But I held out hope until he was elected for his second term that he would actualy do something transformational...but that hope was dashed on the rocks of chained CPI, The TPP and increase of drone strikes all over the world...something he owns as CIC.

Give credit where credit is due.

And if you're on this site you have to know that the repugs have consistently blocked closing Guantanamo. You know that, right, so why keep maintaining that he hasn't closed it. What was he supposed to, wave his "magic wand"?

I agree, some of the other things you cite are legitimate, but to be fair, try stacking them up against all of the accomplishments and his record comes out way ahead.

What president has been better since FDR? LBJ maybe but then there is Vietnam on his record. Hell, FDR interned Japanese Americans and most of his New Deals programs were restricted to whites only (btw, LBJ's Great Society programs remedied much of that exclusion).

Truman was a good Dem but dropping the nukes is a mark against him. Ike was not bad. Republicans weren't all crazy then.

Kennedy didn't get time to show what he would have accomplished.

Johnson, we've already discussed.

Nixon was a crook.

Carter was a nice guy in a down economy and was screwed by the Reagan crowds' treasonous dealings with Iran on the hostage situation before the election so he didn't get a second term to be judged on.

Reagan, treason and dementia, not a good mix.

Papa Bush — meh.

Clinton, everybody was working but Nafta and Cafta began the deluge of off-shoring jobs.

Cheney/W. Bush — don't get me started, the worse ever, no doubt about it.

Obama stacks up pretty damn good to all those guys.

My point again is, give credit where credit is due. Nobody gets everything they want from any president.

Jan 2016

If you think like that...Bush asked for the bailout and congress gave it to him and Obama inherited it.

But Gitmo is a prime example of what I am talking about...and I have argued this before right here on DU years ago.
Gitmo is a military operation, and Obama is CIC and the congress has no say so in a military operation save that of funding.
And that is when we were tricked, because he asked congress for special funds to build a new prison in the US and gave them the power to say no.

He did not need a new prison to close it and deal with the people who have been there for over 10 years some with no charges ...and that is a shame on us, Obama, and the USA. And we even tortured them with forced feedings...and that was during Obama's time. And he has the power now and when he first took office to order it done, and congress has nothing to say in the matter.

Yes our history of POTUS is a sad one for sure...and that is whey we need an honest moral person as president...and Sanders is the only one I see out there that is even close to that. And Obama has not dealt honestly with us and played political games and given us what a moderate Republican would have given us.

We have made a series of errors in selecting a POTUS...and if we get it wrong again it could be the end of our empire and the beguiling of a third world status for most of us.,,or worse, a cataclysmic war.

76% of Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck

Roughly three-quarters of Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck, with little to no emergency savings, according to a survey released by Bankrate.com Monday.

Fewer than one in four Americans have enough money in their savings account to cover at least six months of expenses, enough to help cushion the blow of a job loss, medical emergency or some other unexpected event, according to the survey of 1,000 adults. Meanwhile, 50% of those surveyed have less than a three-month cushion and 27% had no savings at all.

http://money.cnn.com/2013/06/24/pf/emergency-savings/

Stock Market Surge Bypasses Most Americans, Poll Shows

More than three-quarters of Americans say the five-year bull market in U.S. stocks has had little or no effect on their financial well-being, according to a Bloomberg National Poll.

Seventy-seven percent of respondents dismissed the 176 percent rise in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (SPX) since its March 9, 2009 financial crisis low, according to the poll, taken March 7-10. Barely one in five -- 21 percent -- said the market’s gains have made them “feel more financially” secure.
...

The poll’s findings reflect the concentration of financial assets among better-off Americans. Only about half of Americans own stock, either directly or through retirement accounts, according to the Fed’s 2010 Survey of Consumer Finances.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-03-12/stock-market-surge-bypasses-most-americans-poll-shows.html

Roughly 36 percent of working-age survey respondents said they have less than $1,000 in savings and personal retirement investments, and 60 percent reported having less than $25,000 saved. The numbers are similar among retirees surveyed: 58 percent have less than $25,000 on hand, and 29 percent have less than $1,000 saved.

Study: 401(k) retirement plans failing most workers
The report from the Economic Policy Institute, a liberal-leaning public policy think-tank, illustrates how the shift from pensions to individual savings accounts has affected retirees. The authors find that it is the wealthiest workers whoare benefiting the most because they can actually contribute enough to make 401(k) plans work for retirement.
"401(k)s were never designed to replace pensions for most workers. They serve primarily as a tax shelter for high earners," said economist Monique Morrissey, the report's co-author, in a statement. "The 401(k) revolution has been a disaster, yet some policymakers are calling for cuts to Social Security, which will be the only significant source of retirement income for most Americans--if they are able to retire in the first place."

The report also found:

Households earning in the top fifth accounted for 72 percent of total savings in retirement accounts in 2010 and were the only income group that had more than their annual income saved in these accounts.

Participation in defined-benefit pensions by workers from 25 to 61 years old declined over the past decade, from 52 percent in 2000 to 45 percent in 2010.

For single people, black and Hispanic households and those headed by someone without a college degree, the median household has no savings in retirement accounts.

On average, white households have more than six times as much saved in retirement accounts as Hispanic or black households.

Sat Jan 2, 2016, 01:06 PM
Jan 2016

I respectfully disagree. Obama did NOT push it through, he hemmed and hawed and tried to avoid getting it passed in any timely manner. The person who SHOULD be credited with getting it pushed through is Nancy Pelosi and I'm not a fan of her in the least. That being said, I will give credit where credit is due and it belongs on her shoulders and the pressure she brought to bear.

I especially single this out because I remember when his campaign was asked about repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and one of his campaign people said "So and so, our campaign usually doesn't give a one word answer but when it comes to "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" the answer is yes". I'm paraphrasing as I don't remember it exactly but tried to come close because that aide or whatever said yes, committed to it, didn't make excuses which is why I'm being so critical of your giving him credit for something he doesn't deserve and tried to avoid.

I think the single biggest things he will be remembered for is opening up Cuba, which is huge and about time, as well as Obamacare, despite the fact the latter is a bailout package to insurance companies. I have no problem with Single Payer but I resent the idea that for the fact I breathe I'm expected to pay money to for-profit insurance. Anyway, I commend him in opening up Cuba as he could've just as soon let it be. The embargo's continuation for as long as it has been I have to think is a running joke to most people. One or two years after the USSR broke up that should've ended, plain and simple.

The GOP congress doesn't answer to people who vote for them... they could care less about the people who don't support them

If we just say "Nothing to see here" then we are failing the ideals of democracy and of a true opportunity-oriented, socially responsible, free-enterprise economy.

Beyond that, I don't know how many details you want. He has supported, proposed, initiated many many specifics over tyhe years and in his current campaign.

You might also find it instructive to look at what he did in Burlington as mayor. He had the same rap against him in his first campaign and won a fluky narrow victory, and inherited a hostile city giovernment and political establishment. But he rolled up his sleeve, engaged in building a consensus, dealt effectively with practical specific issues as an executuive.....and won numerous reelections, promotins to Congress and the admiration of even those who were opposed to his ideology.

While a city is not the Federal government, it can be expected that he would use the same strategy if elected.

The details any reasonable person who knows how congress works is how he's going to get his agenda past people who don't answer to those who vote for them.

That's reasonable

Burlington VT is not full of people who spent 24 billion in shutting down the government for something really stupid...

Come on, we already know GOPrs are crazy... the should be in jail not in office.

They do that because they trust that he' s got their backs on the issues that matter.

And are you suggesting that we should continue to allow the far right GOP loonies continue to dictate the national agenda? How about standing up to them and fighting them on real issues, instead of assuming they are All Powerful Darth Vaders and we poor widdle liberals can't get anything done against their supernatural powers?

He's not going to be like Obama and play nice at the beginning with all of them. Bernie's been in Congress long enough that I'm pretty sure he knows who the real rotten apples in the Republican bunch and call them out on it. He won't let them come from the position of absolute strength and make him cave.

I mean the drone program and expansion of things like the NSA spying program are legitimate concerns. The whole "If you have nothing to hide than you have nothing to fear". My privacy is my privacy and unless you have a warrant that you got by actually doing your job and collected evidence then law enforcement and other government agencies don't have the right to access my house, my phone or computer records.

I have some of my own, and don't disagree with those you posted.
But many of the attacks on Obama come from increasingly condescending, smugly arrogant Sanders supporters who are actually taking shots at Clinton.

Killing 100 innocents for every SUSPECT. The acceptance and normalization of torture. The greatest persecution of whistle-blowers of any recent president. The acceptance of gross domestic spying until it was brought into the daylight and then still trying to punish the person that brought it into the daylight. The acceptance of the Patriot Act.

Hillary is somewhere to his right, particularly on foreign policy and the Mideast, in specific. Likely to do what she says, which is to double-down and escalate the failed neocon regime change of Shi'ia states. HRC definitely is not a transformative figure, at least not in the progressive conception of the term, but will likely be a consequential one in terms of getting us into at least one major war.

Sorry, not buying into the OP.

The only president who even runs him close in those respects was Ronald Reagan.

"Transformative" does not mean "making things better".
