Benghazi Panel Republican 'Hopeful' Clinton Will Be Charged

WASHINGTON — Jan 8, 2016, 5:51 PM ET

A Republican member of the House Benghazi committee says he is "hopeful" the Justice Department will bring charges against Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for having classified information on her private email server.

Rep. Mike Pompeo of Kansas said there is increasing evidence that "an enormous amount of information" on Clinton's private server is classified.

"It was classified when it was on her server, and it was classified when it was sent," Pompeo told conservative radio host Lars Larson on Thursday.

Pompeo said he is "anxious" for the Justice Department and FBI to make a determination on whether to bring charges against Clinton as quickly as possible. If charges are made, a grand jury will determine whether to indict.

"I think that there is only one answer that can be reached, and I am hopeful that will be the outcome that the FBI achieves," said Pompeo, who also serves on the House Intelligence Committee.

The State Department has dramatically revised downward — from about 38,000 to one — its estimate of the number of pages of messages in Hillary Clinton aides' private email about training on cybersecurity threats and other computer-related issues.

Just two weeks ago, Justice Department attorney Jason Lee told the Competitive Enterprise Institute that tens of thousands of pages of emails from the private accounts of Clinton State Department chief of staff Cheryl Mills and deputy chief of staff Huma Abedin were "potentially responsive" to the conservative group's series of Freedom of Information Act requests filed soon after the revelation last March that Clinton exclusively used a private email account as secretary of state.

However, by early Tuesday morning, that tally had dwindled significantly — to just one email between Mills and Abedin, according to a follow-up message from DOJ lawyer James Todd Jr.
