Breathe
Yesterday saw a hint of possibility breathed into our local political discussions. Our monthly luncheon was host to a couple of youthful campaign coordinators from the Sanders and Clinton camps. The first of many points of agreement was the stunning contrast between the behaviors of the Democratic and Republican candidates. Acknowledging that campaigns come with a certain expectation of contention, we all shook our heads at the GOP contenders race to be the most offensively outrageous.
Each of our two guests, both in their late twenties, gave excellent presentations for the candidates, then fielded questions. Each was very well equipped and provided answers that were both informative and inviting to further inquiry. They mentioned that they had been friends for a dozen years and each was delighted to learn of the others campaign work, and both of them look forward to continuing reliance on that friendship in the years ahead.
These two young people brought us a potent reminder that the values that bind us together are stronger than the points on which we differ, that Democrats are joined by a common and fundamental caring for all people that is boastfully absent on the other side. With such young people we have every reason to believe in a beneficent future for the party that builds on the very best the people of this country have to offer. Their breath of fresh air is invigorating and very, very welcome.
