Obama widens margin over Romney in Massachusetts (64-32 RV, 60-38 LV)

Not a state that's on the line obviously, but these numbers might be worthwhile to examine from the perspective of an example of Romney's potential National deterioration.

Poll: President Obama leads Mitt Romney by 2 to 1 margin in Massachusetts

Tuesday, September 18, 2012, 1:00 AM

SPRINGFIELD - Although President Barack Obama is expected to defeat Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in Massachusetts this November, the margin by which the incumbent is edging the one-term Bay State governor is growing, according to a new poll released Tuesday.

A survey by the Western New England University Polling Institute through a partnership with The Republican and MassLive.com revealed that Obama is now edging Romney, 64-32 percent, among registered voters and by 22 points, 60-38 percent, among likely voters.

In late May, the last time the university conducted a political poll, Obama led with registered voters 56-34 percent. At the time, likely voters weren't distinguished since the November election was more than five months away.

While Obama's favorable/unfavorable ratio has become more positive since the previous poll, Romney's popularity has dropped overall, according to the survey.

And while Elizabeth now seems to be pulling ahead in 3 new polls and might be able to do this on her own anyway, it doesn't hurt if Obama's support goes up in Massachusetts and helps pull her over too.

If Romney goes down further in MA, one would assume it will eventually take Brown down too.

With the roll out of the first round of negative ads in the highly-contested Massachusetts Senate race last week, observers say voters should expect to see attacks between Republican Scott Brown and Democrat Elizabeth Warren get dicier in the coming weeks.

"Both campaigns are at this awkward stage right now where it's as if they are looking for any excuse to go on the attack," said Robert Boatright, an associate professor of Political Science at Clark University.

But don't expect that hesitation to last long, said Boatright.

"My sense is we'll get there in a week or two, though probably not until after the first debate -- I think both would prefer to avoid being put on the spot in a debate by a question about their advertising tactics."
