Conservative publication smears woman who asked debate question about equal pay

From The Raw Story:

Conservative publication smears woman who asked debate question about equal pay

The conservative publication Free Beacon on Wednesday published an article smearing the 24-year-old woman who asked about equal pay for women at the presidential debate.

The article, published anonymously, alleged that Katherine Fenton’s Twitter account “reveals that purple Joose is her choice to get blackout drunk and she has a history of getting wet at happy hour.” The article also highlights sexually suggestive messages Fenton allegedly sent from her Twitter account.

Another article about this from Feministing:

Well, you did dare to speak in public, so I guess you deserve this

Remember Katherine Fenton, the young woman who asked the candidates a question about the gender pay gap during Tuesday’s debate? The one who gave Barack Obama the chance to remind us that the first law he ever signed was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and gave Mitt Romney the chance to give us all a great meme (and also invent a story about his track record of hiring women)? Well, because that 24-year-old woman had the nerve, the audacity, to ask about gender inequality – IN PUBLIC, OUT LOUD – she’s now the target of attacks on the right.

I’m not going to link to the Free Beacon, the conservative site that yesterday put up a post about Fenton – with no author byline, real classy move – because I don’t want to give them the traffic. But Free Beacon has taken to Fenton’s Twitter feed in an attempt to find tweets that will discredit her. And as we all know, the best way to discredit a woman in America is to call her a slut (it’s a tie with “fat” and “ugly,” and you get extra Douchebag Points if you can do all three).

(snip)

According to that interview, Fenton doesn’t consider herself a feminist, but let me tell you something, Katherine: if a 24-year-old man had stood up and asked a question that conservatives didn’t like, they wouldn’t pull this kind of stunt. They wouldn’t bring up his drinking and throw around sexual innuendo about him, because in our culture, drinking and fucking make men more powerful, not less.

This shit is sexist, and feminism is the fight against sexism. You might not consider yourself one of us, Katherine, but we’ve got your back anyway.

People want to support the positions without the label.

Similarly, many independent voters may despise what John Boehner and Mitch McConnell (Mr. One-term president) are doing to Congress and hate the GW Bush presidency even more and are OK with the Obama presidency...but are uncomfortable with identifying as liberal thanks to years of Rush and Vannity trashing that word.

And then those who are normal human beings and are against the old school gender roles for women but are afraid of being "feminists" thanks again to the large right wing and men's rights industry.

Let's see:

She's a Pre-K Teacher whose decision is to vote for the guy that wants to cut educational spending, or the guy that has repeatedly called for MORE spending in education, especially in pre-school ... Undecided; yeah, right!

She was not happy with either candidates answer?

In what new ways to you intend to rectify the inequalities in the workplace, specifically regarding females making only 72 percent of what their male counterparts earn?

Her criticism was, she wanted to know about NEW SOLUTIONS, not what they have done ...

Let's see:

One candidate answered, "well, I looked at a binder full of women to consider hiring ... I even hired a couple"; whereas, the other candidate signed legislation that allows for a remedy to the problem (that, BTW, the first candidate stated he would not have signed) ... undecided; yeah, right!

She is uncertain as to whether she is better off than she was four years ago.

Let's see:

She 24 years old. That means 4 years ago she was in, or just finished college, so she was just entering the workforce ... assuming her Pre-K teaching job (Degree Required), rather than a Nursey School (no degree required). She still has a job ... and she is undecided; yeah, right!

I could go on ... but my brain hurts.

Wage-gap debate questioner Katherine Fenton “absolutely not” a feminist

It took roughly 30 seconds after she asked about the wage gap last night for the right to start calling Katherine Fenton a left-wing conspiracy, vainly trying to connect her to someone who worked for Code Pink, calling her a “feminazi,” and a “party girl.” Reached by Salon at her home in Floral Park, N.Y., today, Fenton confirmed that she’s no plant. She is, she says, a 24-year-old pre-K teacher and an undecided voter. Still undecided, in fact. And not a feminist.

(snip)

So why is she undecided? Talking to Fenton today was an exercise in the frustrations and incoherences of such voters. She says she approves of Obama’s health insurance reform, since it’s allowed her to stay on her parents’ insurance. “That’s been really critical, especially for me,” she said. “I’ve had some medical things that I’ve had to get tested and had to go to the doctor fairly often.”

But she also says she’s worried about the deficit: “$16 trillion in debt is a huge figure.” And she’s torn on the question of whether she’s better off than four years ago. “While I’m feeling healthy and safe and comfortable, I can’t really feel the same about our nation.” And she claims to be dissatisfied with the answer she got from both candidates: “I asked for new solutions, not what they’ve already done.”

Despite asking a question that raised the hackles of the anti-feminist brigade, Fenton was vehement when I asked her if she’s a feminist. “Absolutely not,” she said. “I’m a 24-year-old woman that lives in the United States and feels like I should be treated the same as anyone else. That makes me a normal human being.”

She sounds like she listens to Fox "news" and/or OxyRush. The right-wing MSM (meaning the entire media) pushes this debt non-story.

If debt is such a problem, why are interest rates at all-time lows?
