British Library to open first national Women's Liberation archive
The British Library has announced that it will open the first national Womens Liberation oral history archive on March 8, to coincide with International Womens Day.
Named Sisterhood & After, the oral archive contains 350 hours of audio, as well as video. It contains of clips pertaining to the entire Womens Liberation Movement from the Northern Ireland Womens Rights Movement, through to Greenham common.
The full archive will be accessible via the British Library for readers and researchers as part of its permanent archive. Selected clips will be freely available to all via a dedicated learning website which will also go live on March 8.
Sisterhood & After is also made up of interviews with 60 key feminist activists from over the last century, including: Una Kroll, 87 year-old campaigner for women's right to be priests, Susie Orbach, author of the 1978 polemic Fat is a Feminist Issue and Sue Lopez, who played football for England in the 1970s and has been quietly pushing the Football Association to be more inclusive of women ever since.
