I've hit the Trifecta! My dentist, my doctor and now even my priest are all women.....
How wonderful to have lived in such a time! Ten years ago as an HIV patient I was assigned a young Asian female dentist at the state medical university. She's fabulous and takes care of me wonderfully and I'd fight to keep her. A few years later I was lucky enough to find myself with a female GP. Her warmth and openness allows me to talk to her about things I could never force myself to bring up to a male doctor. I consider myself lucky to have both of them in my life.
Last year our small town Episcopal priest retired. We're deep in the heart of Dixie but he was a solid leftist and I was really depressed. No one could possibly take his place. No one, that is, until our small parish got its first female priest. She today has become a true joy in my life.
Next week I turn 59. I wasn't even AWARE of the Womens Movement until the early '70's and then, in my ignorance I dismissed it until a close feminst friend educated me. However bad things may look from day to day, women have come a long, long way in the last 40 years. Not far enough certainly, but a long, long way. May the journey continue without delay.
And take some pleasure in the knowledge that a baby girl born today will never know the awful prejudice her grandmothers faced in 1972.
