Lisa Madigan is many things. Shes a three-time elected attorney general for the state of Illinois. Shes a 46-year-old woman. Shes an elected official whos been asked how she could be a mother and governor at the same time. What she is not is a little girl being lead around by her father.
The quickest way to demean a woman is to infantilize her, in this case something Chicago Tribune cartoonist Scott Stanis has been doing a lot. The above cartoon is supposed to be a commentary on the fact that Madigans father is Michael J. Madigan, who is the Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives. (The caption is something we added). Stanis doesnt seem to be all that creative how he portrays their relationship, hes depicted Madigan as a little girl at least two other times in cartoons. Maybe its time to get some better jokes? (And of course not only does he draw her as a little girl but one with a pink shirt and a name dotted with a heart, because SEXISM.)
Well heres your chance because Stanis is running a caption contest for his latest cartoon (see above). You can email your suggestions (and complaints about its sexism) to ctc-captions@tribune.com. (Act fast, because theyll pick the winner on Thursday).
Why not submit some suggestions. Weve posted one above, but how about some others?

(12,645 posts)And I say this as someone who knows nothing about this politician.
The cartoonist clearly thinks she's immature and assisted by nepotism. And guess what? Bush was illustrated as a little boy wearing a huge cowboy hat for much the same reasons. ("Help! Uncle Dick! Uncle Dick!" I've seen this done many times, with many male politicians in the same position; she shouldn't get a free pass due to her gender.
It seems to me that a sexist cartoon would be specifically mocking her appearance or sexuality, which is not what's going on here. Yeah, she looks pretty silly as a teeny tiny widdle girl, but were you expecting the target of a political cartoon to be portrayed respectfully?

(115,103 posts)Bush WAS helped throughout his life by his father. He WAS inept and a failure who wouldn't have achieved anything without nepotism.
Sexism isn't just about objectifying and sexualizing women.
The pink dress and heart-dotted-i are indeed markers of sexism.

(12,645 posts)Because she's a public figure and political cartoonists are entitled to their opinions, that's why. She deserves no more respect than pols like Obama and Boehner receive from professional caricaturists on a daily basis. Isn't that gender neutrality?
We can argue about the color of the dress and the heart I suppose, but surely you can't be saying that only male politicians you disapprove of should be made to look stupid.

(41,998 posts)But the male and female power dynamics are very different. HOW they are presented causes different perceptions in the public. I despise Sarah Palin for instance , but I abject to her being referred to in sexist terms.
So what's with the miter? Is the women Catholic?, I don't know the origin of the cartoon, but it looks like its also presenting anti-Catholicism.

(12,645 posts)...am I glad I'm not a political cartoonist in this day and age.
Bicoastal Out.
Sensitive. It was just a question.
Would you have rather been a political cartoonist in a different era, say WW2?

(41,998 posts)Not sexist?
Bush wore a cowboy hat because he thought he was a Cowboy.

(998 posts)A commentor in this thread claims to know nothing about Lisa, yet (he) feels fine comparing this cartoon to the way Dubya was treated. Are you kidding me? My guess is this poster just wanted to get a cheap comment in about gender equality when (he) probably has very little interest in this.
When called on it, he held his breath and took his Transformer toys home.

(12,645 posts)I just lost interest and moved on with my Friday, which turned out to be very enjoyable when I got off work.
My point still stands about Lisa Whatsherface. I don't NEED to know anything about her. She might be the second coming of Ann Richards, or she might be another Palin. But the fact remains--where you see the demeaning of all womankind, I see the fair game caricaturization of a politician, and extremely mild caricaturing at that.
Just my opinion, though. Why not post it in GD and see what everyone thinks about it? They're not all militant sexists like I apparently am, you know.

(41,998 posts)I for one, do not get my feminist insight from GD here at DU. It's often at odds with my actual education of the topic.
You---feel free to do so, as I'm sure you do.
