This is Women in History Month.
With a Sunday birthday, Jean is a remarkable person:
In 1974, Sammet became the first female president of the Association for Computing Machinery. She's written multiple books, including Programming Languages: History and Fundamentals. She was a recipient of the 1989 Lovelace Award and the 2009 Computer Pioneer Award, given by the IEEE Computer Society.

(6,121 posts)It was a very simple programming language (roughly at the FORTRAN II level)
that was the first to deal with equations where not all the variables had numerical values. Modern systems of this type include MATLAB and Maple.
We occasionally crossed paths during the late 1960's and early 1970's

(6,121 posts)Was thinking in terms of Jean, but I worked with FORMAC some. In money of my early lives I wrote commercial compilers for programming languages, natural language syntax analysers (actual college course name),... I was also an ACM Officer. That kind of stuff.
