An obsession with the weight of famous people is not new. Its been driving ratings, selling magazines, newspapers and diet products for decades. But this is different. Over the past few years the goal posts have moved and the new media fixation has become the weight of pregnant women and new mothers. They are the new sweet spot, their weight has become the new gossip commodity and it is disturbing, evil madness.
What the actual fuck. In what universe did it become acceptable for the media to mock and humiliate pregnant women? Oh, this one. The one we live in. The one that finds it hilarious to speculate that Kim Kardashians entire pregnancy is an elaborate sham to cover the fact shes just fat due to binges on pasta, cake, and ice cream.. They also claim she hates her body.
Gee. I cant imagine why that would be.
Again, this is not just about Kim Kardashian.
The disgusting manner in which she is being treated by a media (and I include some websites and social media in this, its not just US gossip magazines) to whom the only acceptable pregnancy weight is tiny with bigger boobs and a cute volleyball sized bump (tangent: God, I hate that word) is an insult to all of us. Not to mention the medias after-baby benchmark that now seems to involve walking down a Victorias Secret runway in a push-up bra, g-string and giant angel wings.

(153,193 posts)this will invite ridicule:
as for pregnant gals being bashed in general, I haven't seen that
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)I think it's awful they make a big deal about her weight, but it's really no worse than what she puts out there about herself.

(153,193 posts)I see that standard held against women in general, not just the pregnant gals.....heck, remember when Alicia Silverstone gained a few pounds? It was like she had committed a felony.

(19,818 posts)no dignity at all. But this is a woman who rose to fame doing internet porn, you reap what you sew.

(19,348 posts)Pregnant women in general are NOT frowned upon for their weight gain, it is expected.
Nor should women be assaulted for their weight in general.

(42,008 posts)She was an eye opening example for this author. Since she *is* all out there and shit.
I just googled "weight gain and stars, weight gain and pregnancy---looks like an issue to me.
(Plus I'm stealing the phrase "what the actual fuck"

(115,103 posts)And as usual, hardly anyone is bothering to pay any attention at all. Quelle surprise!
You really got some nasty shit spewed ok this thread. All you had to do was say her name. Fucking sick.
ismnotwasm
(42,008 posts)Ms. Kardashian, as the blogger clearly states, is not the issue.
But she's the topic of choice.

(115,103 posts)Hard to write that kind of intentional point-missing off as innocuous.

(3,657 posts)Famous and rich for rolling around in front of a camera like Jaba the Hut. Then whoring yourself out for millions for a fraudulent marriage?

(42,008 posts)Her site is a kind of a Mom blog, I think. Her point was tabloid depictions of famous women and endless speculating on their before and after weight presents a false picture of weight and pregnancy.
What I'm finding fascinating is the number of views this post has received, combined with the general loathing expressed. Km Kardashian is not, apparently a person you want to use to make your point. However, the blogger made a slide show with picture after picture of tabloid speculation on her state of pregnancy.

(43,049 posts)is really none of our business, and not even after it seems part of the job description of models and starlets. And the Kardashians continue the unsavory practice of being famous merely for being famous, so anything about them is "news".
But, I'm wondering-- just how much hunger is there out here for this "news"? Anyone who buys a can of coffee at the supermarket or some underwear at K-Mart is overwhelmed by the breathless front pages of the latest perfidies of the rich and whatevers, and I have myself, while waiting to pay for some toilet paper, actually seen a newspaper cover claiming the the most recently pregnant Kardashian wants to see just how fat she can get.
It's not easy to ignore this nonsense, but the strange thing is that I have never actually seen anyone buying one of these rags. Have the publishers come upon a secret way to make a profit simply showing the rags? Could publicity mavens be financing all of this to keep Kardashians, washed up actresses, and British royalty in the news when they never actually do anything?
At 1:30 in the morning, such thoughts become far more important than they should be.

(42,008 posts)They're often at work, so I thumb through them now and again. I don't watch much TV, ( not a TV snob, Its just not for me) and despise reality TV, so I'm a little pop-culturally backward in that regard. I ask other people, who's this or that person.
And you're right, not as late for me, but-- work tomorrow.

(57,936 posts)I gained so much with my first child and barely enough with my second. No reason for the difference that I can think of -- except that I had a lot of work with my first when I had my second.
But it's easy to lose weight running around after an active two-year-old plus. Just trying to keep up with a child that age burns your calories. So women shouldn't worry. They should just eat right and keep active.
The press should mind its own business on this one.

(115,103 posts)Have you heard the term 'pregorexia' yet? People blame the sick fixation on celebrity women's bodies before, during, and after pregnancy for it.
All the speculation every time one of them is shown as having any discernible 'bump' (ugh), cause, you know, they're not human and their weight isn't supposed to fluctuate.
It's sick, but ... well, Idiocracy.
Also, I like this part:
Sometimes when I give a speech about the ways media and marketers fail when theyre talking to women, one of my points is about the use of Photoshop and to illustrate it, one of the images I use is this:

(115,103 posts)Just make some damned fembots already and get it over with.
Maybe then more women will wake the fuck up.

(115,103 posts)Nope! Let's just say its her fault, and make excuses for it... amirite, ladies?
