So, I paint my nails pretty regularly these days. I also work as a barista/cashier pretty regularly these days. A few weeks back, I had a customer come in, a fairly typical, sheltered, suburban soccer mom, and she ordered a latte from me. She saw my brightly colored nails and said, Wow, youre so brave! My son asked me about painting his nails, and if its okay for boys to do that. Now Ill tell him theres a cool guy who does it too! It was a nice moment, very cute.
Then, last week, she came in again, and said, Hey, Im so glad youre here! I want you to meet someone! She then brings her son forward, and says, Okay sweetie, show him what you did! And he throws his hands up, showing off his bright, sparkling blue nails. He shows them off, and I show mine off to him. He smiles. We fist bump.
Guys, Ive only wanted to cry once at work before, and that was when someone ordered a large dry soy cappuccino on ice.
This time, though. This was a good cry.

(27,985 posts)I am quite used to gender bending. It happens all over this city. And I think it's a good thing.

(115,103 posts)Whatever it takes. It wasn't until I came to Seattle that I saw the level of diversity that made me understand that there's a lot more than just girl, boy, het, homo, trans, etc. People here come in at least as many flavors as Baskin Robbins.

I don't know if it was growing up in a multi racial family or early exposure to Rocky Horror or what, but I've always intuitively known that these little labels are nothing but nonsense ... I used to think it was just for lazy minds, but I have realized it's also for bigots... and the roots are in power and oppression.

(115,103 posts)it kills me to see parents basically telling their kids that they're wrong for liking harmless things... if a kid is a bully, that's a valid reason to tell them that their behavior is wrong... but telling them they're wrong for liking the wrong colors, toys, characters, hobbies, etc... just breaks my heart.
One need only observe some of today's societal ills to see what damage might be done to a child by forging such a divide between female and male during the most important learning stages of his or her life.
