self defense classes- correction, seminar- for women

Last edited Wed May 7, 2014, 12:27 PM - Edit history (1)

so, this is posted on a local board-

Neighborhood meeting
Safety Seminar For Women

The 24 th Police District's Domestic Violence Officer invites all local women to attend this informative seminar. Practical tips will be shared to increase your personal safety. People who have attended previous seminars have raved about them. Don't miss this event. Mark your calendar now. Contact your neighbors. Spread the word. It will take place in the 24th District Police Station at 6464 N. Clark St.

to which i reply-
practical as these seems, i really, really hate this. why does it have to single women out this way? is there anything about this that doesnt apply to men on the street as well?
please stop cops.

yeah, some good ol unbelievable followed, including this-

I've not only thought about it, but had a lot of significant discussion with somebody really smart about it-- my wife-- since she is actually just about done writing a book about rape culture. I understand and agree with you that blaming the victim is a bad thing. I just do not see that this is what is happening here. I see this as strength and an opportunity for empowerment. You ask, shouldn't this apply to men as well? Yes, but the opportunity for and cultural acceptance of men being able to defend themselves is already well established; this perhaps helps to bridge a gap there just a little bit. That's not anything like saying "Ladies! Stop wearing short skirts! It's your fault!"

Please be sure to pre-order my wife's book. When/if she ever gets paid, you'll be indirectly supporting Twisted Tapas, which is where we spend most of our money lately. (More info: http://www.amazon.com/Asking-It-Alarming-Culture-about/dp/0738217026 )

sigh. i'm to old for this.
can we take back the night now? pretty please?

The point is that women are at far greater risk of inflicted violence than men. Women tend not to go out on their own at night.

Think about that when you quote the figures about how men are much more "vulnerable" to violence than women.

I warn you against using figures with inherent statistical bias and you use the figures anyway.

But you are the wronged party

i said they were equally vulnerable, therefore there was no reason to point out women as victims. we already know.

the other block is what was posted in the thread by others.

Next, I did not ascribe the second block of text to you.

Now I will accept that there may be some part of this that you have left out, but the way your OP reads you are making objection to women taking self defense classes and saying men should be included. In fact inclusion in a self defense context is unlikely to be welcome, either by the teachers or the participants. If, instead, these classes were meant to be rape or assault awareness classes then men taking part in them is equally inappropriate as it is men who women feel are threatening.

6. what i object to
Wed May 7, 2014, 12:26 PM
May 2014

is the idea that women are raped because they failed to protect themselves.
it isnt really a self defense class, just a seminar about crime avoidance and reporting to cops.
around here, lots of people would like to hear this message. singling it out as a special concern of women puts the onus on them for rape.
just saying it is for women reinforces fears, it doesnt help. it makes women turn in all the more. and again, we DO NOT NEED TO BE TOLD THIS.
like i said in another post-
we drink that fear with our coffee in the morning, and we tuck it under our pillow at night.

it feels like an implicit threat to me.
it did to a lot of other women in the thread.

But that is not the way your Original Post read.

Second: it is obvious that you are intelligent and I would suspect that verbally you express yourself very well. Unfortunately your abilities with the written word are not as effective.

Third: I am not saying stop posting indeed keep it up but I am saying read more posts by people like WilliamPitt, Gravitycollapse, Boston_bean and others. Ask yourself why they phrase things the way they do and if at a complete loss send them a private message to ask. Don't go back to school but learn how to teach yourself.

Fourth: Read or listen to poetry (Dylan Thomas as spoken by Richard Burton is good) and there are numerous Slam poets to read and listen to. By whatever means find the literature you love to read or listen to.

Learn - you have lessons to teach us all!

Even if you are writing on a tablet or mobile phone you are expressing yourself poorly.

Continuing education is for everyone from 5 to 85. As you know Mr Pitt-Rivers please speak to him and, as I say, you can educate us all.

I don't see a problem.

<Name left out intentionally> offers ideas and suggestions for addressing how we as a culture can take rape much more seriously without compromising the rights of the accused.

Good luck to your wife and her book. I have my own local restaurants that I prefer to support.

I had questions. I asked them.
I put all the links together so that everyone else could follow along if they wanted.

You never use to be like this.
Anyone can see what happened in this thread and understand the post I made in the lounge. I thought it was funny that someone here would give mopinko a bunch of shit about her posting style and I made a joke about it. Shit like this happens all the time, especially in this group. You're the only person who took issue with it. Apparently, you think it's a one way street. Hof can link to posts and ridicule and laugh about them, but god forbid anyone link back here and show any displeasure with a post. Have you anointed yourself the enforcer of hypocrisy? Jeez, TA, get over yourself.

On Mon May 12, 2014, 07:36 AM an alert was sent on the following post:

What has happened to you?
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1255&pid=43211

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

Coming into a safe haven group and insults the group and it's members. He began an argument he began by linking to this thread in the lounge http://upload.democraticunderground.com/1018615949#post8
and comes here to insult Tuesday Afternoon and the group more generally.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Mon May 12, 2014, 07:53 AM, and the Jury voted 0-7 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: The hosts of the safehaven group should decide this one. I don't believe this was an appropriate alert for the jury.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Nobody's finest hour, but it would be unfair to hide this given what juries have been allowing to stand recently.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: The entire exchange seems rather childish. This post doesn't deserve to be hidden unless the rest of the thread is. Can't we all just get along?
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: The alert must be a joke. Pintobean is responding to two callouts. Tuesday Afternoon is the one that should be addressed in this so called safe haven.

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.
