Talking Turkey About Guns

Everyone has friends and relatives with strong opinions and shaky facts. You can help set the table straight -- all you need is this simple guide to Talking Turkey about guns!

This Thanksgiving, when talk around the table turns to politics and current events, you can help set the record straight on some of the most common myths about guns.

Myth #1: We don't need new gun laws -- we just need to enforce the laws already on the books.

Fact: We do need to prosecute more gun crimes - but we also need to close legal loopholes that are putting guns in the hands of criminals. An estimated 40% of guns are transferred without a background check because federal law doesn't require checks for guns sold online, at gun shows or through other "private" sales.

See the other common myths here:

'no more gun stuff' on DU. Much as I admire your useful post, it might be well to check with Skinner for the details. I didn't see his remarks myself. Perhaps he meant no PRO-gun stuff. Just sayin'. Thank you.

Forgiven?

Since 1970 more than 900,000 people have been killed with guns in the United States. That is the equivalent of a fully loaded 747 jumbo jet falling from the sky once a week every week 52 weeks a year. In that same time frame more toddlers under the age of 5 were shot than police on active duty.

I just throw those numbers on the table and let whoever I'm talking to think about them.

Talking Turkey About Guns

FACT: Hunters who shoot their own turkeys with their own buckshot have more dental problems like cracking & chipping teeth by biting into the embedded & unseen buckshot.

MYTH: Turkey hunters are providing needed food for their underfed families - not one family in the USA would be denied a store turkey if they were truly wanting. Hunting to provide is a myth in itself.
