Episcopal Church Takes A Hard Look At Alcohol After Bishop Is Charged With Drunken Driving

By Lauren Markoe

WASHINGTON (RNS) Hundreds of American bicyclists die in collisions with cars each year, but a fatal December crash in Baltimore has triggered some serious soul-searching within the Episcopal Church: The drunken driver, authorities say, was a bishop.

Now clergy and laypeople alike are rereading church policy on alcohol and the consecration of bishops, how addiction is handled and whether the church itself was in any way culpable in the death of cyclist Thomas Palermo, a 41-year-old husband and father of two.

The Rev. Gay Clark Jennings, president of the House of Deputies, one of two main governing bodies of the 2 million-member denomination, said many Episcopalians are asking why church leaders allowed Heather Cook to be confirmed as bishop last September despite their knowledge of her struggle with alcohol.

The bishop's DUI brings them to mind.

Wherever 2 or 3 Episcopalians are gathered together there's sure to be a fifth.

Another name for Episcopalians- Whiskeypalians.

Not to let our SBC brethren off the hook:
Question: Why do you always take two Baptists with you when you go fishing?

Answer: Because if you only bring one, he'll drink all your beer.

A long one for us Catholics:
An Irishman moves into a tiny hamlet in County Kerry, walks into the pub and promptly orders three beers.

The bartender raises his eyebrows, but serves the man three beers, which he drinks quietly at a table, alone.

An hour later, the man has finished the three beers and orders three more.

This happens yet again.

The next evening the man again orders and drinks three beers at a time, several times. Soon the entire town is whispering about the Man Who Orders Three Beers.

Finally, a week later, the bartender broaches the subject on behalf of the town. "I don't mean to pry, but folks around here are wondering why you always order three beers?"

'Tis odd, isn't it?" the man replies, "You see, I have two brothers, and one went to America, and the other to Australia. We promised each other that we would always order an extra two beers whenever we drank as a way of keeping up the family bond."

The bartender and the whole town was pleased with this answer, and soon the Man Who Orders Three Beers became a local celebrity and source of pride to the hamlet, even to the extent that out-of-towners would come to watch him drink.

Then, one day, the man comes in and orders only two beers. The bartender pours them with a heavy heart. This continues for the rest of the evening - he orders only two beers. The word flies around town. Prayers are offered for the soul of one of the brothers.

The next day, the bartender says to the man, "Folks around here, me first of all, want to offer condolences to you for the death of your brother. You know-the two beers and all..."

The man ponders this for a moment, then replies, "You'll be happy to hear that my two brothers are alive and well... It's just that I, myself, have decided to give up drinking for Lent."

“Everything in moderation, including moderation.” It's alright to roll on the floor laughing just don't roll down the stairs.

I feel for the all the victims of drunken drivers a close personal friend of mine died on the bumper of a drunk driver. The Church needs to look at whether they should make someone a bishop that has addiction problems. I know that St. Paul counseled Timothy to take a little wine in his water for his stomach ailment, but he also said that overseers (bishops) should be: 1 Timothy 3:2English Standard Version (ESV)

2 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,..." I am not against her drinking or that Justice Ginsberg had some wine at dinner prior to the State of the Union. But anyone drinking should take a cab if they don't have a sober driver. That was always me- I do drink but I draw the line at riding in a car with an impaired driver.
