We often pray for our desires but if we would learn from what Jesus taught we would hope to pray that the will of God be done on earth as in heaven. This means when we pray for healing or an alleviation of hardship that we resign ourselves that we really desire that God's will be done. Beyond that or maybe because of it prayer moves us closer to God, who is as near as can be.

Psalm 131:2 "Surely I have composed and quieted my soul; Like a weaned child rests against his mother, My soul is like a weaned child within me."
